ESPN recently released a preview clip from its upcoming 30 for 30 series on Nick Saban, and it included a tense flashback to Lane Kiffin’s time working under him at Alabama.

The clip offers a quick glimpse into the sometimes-rocky relationship between Saban and Kiffin during Kiffin’s three seasons as the Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator.

Wouldn't call this a tense moment. I've seen high school coaches chew more unpaid assistant parent arse than this.

Saban was a good coach but cheated tremendously otherwise, he would still be coaching trying to get the all time wins total. Kiffin was built for this era. Saban proved he wasn’t in Miami. Kiffin could run an NFL team. Saban could not.
Kirby and Nick had the largest “recruiting budgets” in the conference. UGA doesn’t come from middle of the pack to what they did without a 22MM recruiting budgets. coaches in UGA and Advisors in LA can attest to the level of money dropped on players in those stats. Why do you think Saban was. Pissed when that was mentioned. Ask Eddie Lacy, Devonte Smith and others on a witness stand under oath. I recently met Saban’s very first recruit while he was at Michigan st in Houston. He seemed like a person that didn’t take anything. Of course Saban didn’t really win much at Michigan State. It was La and it’splerhora of NFzl players that he was interested in. For decades, Miami, ND and other Ohio would come raid a. Saban built a structure and likely handed out bags and kept that talent. He wasn’t the first to pay players at LSUZ that’s how LSU basketball took off in the late 1970’s to early 90’s as a power. Dale kept talking about stipends ans paying players. Look at how prophetic he was.

Arnsbarger was a better X’s and O’s defensive coach. 72 dolphins defense and coached a San Diego air raid defense to the Super Bowl as a DC. He didn’t like to recruit and hired crappy coaches.
Saban hired really good assistants. They made him better. He was smart that way.
Look at his LSU coaching staff from 2094.
Fisher
Boomer
Dooley
Kirby Smart GA
Several others became HCs from what I recalled.
None of these guys are from his tree except smart.
Fisher was a Bowden tree coach - all about the offense.
Muschamp is a coaches son and cut his teeth under Wayne Hall at Auburn in the 1990’s when they had excellent defenses.

Derek Dooley was an excellent ST coordinator and of course Vince’s son.
sT coordinators coach all the different players from linemen to the receivers and DBs as well as the kickers and punters. That is why they typically can become good head coaches being about to understand how to get all the players working together in both coverage and protection.

If any of us are successful in any way any of us can relate to this. I know I can. I am better for it today. Today I am a leader of men and the one thing I can't stand is excuses. Man up and give me solutions.

“Had some moments” is an understatement. When Saban had some folks follow Lane around and check what he was doing in his office, he couldn’t even keep him 5 more days until the national championship. I’m sure ole miss had learned of his “prep” at Bama and decided letting Golding coach was the better decision.

CNS was the boss. PERIOD. Lane still has a good relationship with him. I have children and none of them are the same. Some you have to scream at and some you never have to raise your voice. All different. Aight?

Eh, Saban plays nice on TV. It’s better than it was but Lane is far from one of his favorite people. Saban didn’t even stay in Oxford for the LSU game. He was back in Tuscaloosa that afternoon.

Saban said on Theo’s podcast yesterday he didn’t even know he was being recorded all the years at Alabama and learned Alabama was recording everything for their archives

It wasn’t big brother little brother. I had a mentor early in my career. He would praise me when I did right and chew my a$$ when I did not so good. Without him, I wouldn’t be who I am now. That’s how I view Lane and Nick. I can relate to their relationship.

exactly. this is nothing more than Sr. Alpha and Jr. Alpha.

A few thing strike me though in a major way.

1) CNS is the most prolific user of the word ain't and aight in the history of the world, lol !

and

2) CNS is a self-aware MF. Absolute Genius and call him arrogant if you will but his realization that his personality may have prevented the input he wanted form his guys and straight up admitting it? That's championship level. Never hated CNS. On the contrary. He's my Skip Bertman #2 in life.

Lane really has been in the game forever and he’s still barely 50, my god the kid might be ready for this moment
