During the Always College Football podcast, ESPN analyst Greg McElroy handed out his midseason grade for LSU coach Brian Kelly which was a "B-."

McElroy said the loss to Tennessee dropped Kelly down from a "B" to a "B-." Per SDS:
quote:

“Had they played yesterday, more competitively, we’re sitting there looking at a B. The thing I’ll say about Brian Kelly is that this team, prior to last week, from Week 1 to Week 5 have gotten a little bit better… they’ve improved in some form or fashion.”
McElroy added that Kelly has done "a pretty dang good job" in year No. 1 so far.

What grade would you give Kelly so far? Sounds off in the comment section.

A. CBK has taken a program in disarray with no morale and no future and turned it around.

He's earned no more than a C and that is being generous. He says himself that he gets out coached.

All coaches get out coached on any given Saturday! Including Saban. The grade of B is solid grade IMO. Not B- and certainly not C

I like BK, & this team played 4 qtrs, until UT showed up... I know the cupboard was not fully stocked, but he has talent in the locker room. I'm going to pass on giving him a grade, since it's his 1st year & implementing a new offense, defense, & apparently a new way to play special teams.

What does Cole Cubelic have to say? He seems to be more fair-minded than GM...

McElroy is an Abalama homer. He wanted to play for LSU since he was a little boy, but has resented them ever since they never offered him.

Where did you hear this? All I’ve heard is he dreamed of being a Longhorn.

"The one team that wasn't as open to McElroy during the recruiting process as he would have liked was Texas. Although he embraced Texas Tech as his team after moving to Dallas when he was 10, there was a part of McElroy that wanted to go to Texas or at least be wanted by the Longhorns". "I was recruited by [Texas] a little bit but I was never offered a scholarship," said McElroy. "Like I told the guys in Alabama, I got a good enough look from them that they decided they didn't want me.

B? Maybe B for bad. Worst offense in 20+ years. Brings back nightmares of Daryl Moody. Look it up.

B- so far. He told us it will take time. BK is rebuilding program from the ground up. He is using the portal, but not so much that it hurts the recruiting/player development. He’s putting pieces in place to build towards long term success. Paying the dues now, but just wait. We will have NC contender by year 3!

CBS Sports ranked the top transfer portal teams a few days ago, remember 1.USC 2.Ole Miss, 3.LSU? They gave us a C+, second to worst.

Our DB's look like midgets, uh lil peeps, out there. I guess they're not but they don't look like your prototypical DB.

Bro our dbs are huge lol what are you talking about. Garner and the okie state transfer are two of the biggest corners in cfb

Hmmm...maybe they just play small.

A- overall

A- for staff (ding for ST)
A for use of portal
A for HS recruiting
A for conditioning
A for no opt outs
D for special teams
A- for defense
C- for offense

If BK gets this team to 7 wins with who he inherited in December and finishes with a top 5 recruiting class, A+

C. It was going to be a tough year no matter who was the HC. You need time to rebuild the roster into one that is ready to compete against the SEC week in and week out. That means build quality and quantity on both offensive and defensive lines. Then you need play makers on the outside. Both at WR and CB. Finally you need some studs in the backfield ready to churn out the tough yards and bust some big runs for you. Oh and having a good kicker and punter doesn't hurt at all. I say 2 more years to do all of that. If by year 3 we aren't back in the top portion of the West then we have issues.

C

Losing to better teams happens in a rebuilding year. But he gets downgraded for poor ST play and in game decisions

C. A lot of behind the scenes improvement. Knew this would be a rebuilding year, but the atrocious special teams play & basis for not giving Nuss more PT to see if he has a future is perplexing...

I mean LSU was always gonna get smoked by Tennessee. But the ST play for sure lost the FSU game. LSU should be a 1 loss team right now but thems are the breaks.

I like what BK is doing structurally with the program. His two biggest mistakes so far have been letting Greg McMahon (Special Teams, Houston Gamblers) & Myles Brennan (Dime-dropping QB) walk out that door.
