ESPN's Bill Connelly recently examined all 25 teams in the initial College Football Playoff rankings, identifying each team's biggest flaw that could prevent a national championship run.

For No. 14 LSU, Connelly pointed to "a lack of major explosiveness" in Lane Kiffin's offense this season.

LSU (6-2) faces Alabama this Saturday in Tiger Stadium before hosting Texas and traveling to Tennessee over the next two weeks.

Here's what Connelly wrote about LSU:
quote:

14. LSU Tigers (6-2)

SP+ ranking: fourth (sixth on offense, sixth on defense)

SP+ top-40 opponents remaining: Alabama (Week 10), Texas (Week 11), at Tennessee (Week 12)

Fatal flaw: Big plays. LSU ranks ninth in points per drive on both offense and defense; the Tigers are top 15 in success rate on both sides of the ball, too. There have been turnover issues here and there, but they've scored at least 31 points in seven of eight games. What might hold Lane Kiffin's team back the most as it faces the three best defenses on its schedule, however, is a lack of major explosiveness. Sam Leavitt averages a decent but unspectacular 12.1 yards per completion and lead back Dilin Jones averages just 4.4 yards per carry with almost no big gainers.

Isn’t the fact that Jones’ 4.4 yards per carry not being influenced by huge gainers a good thing?

No. That means he doesn't have any long , explosive runs. That was the entire point.

I figured they say that the fatal flaw is having two losses going into November...

I’d rather have continuous 10 to 12 play drives wearing out defenses with scores versus scoring on two play drives constantly and our defense getting worn out

And also, LSU leads the SEC in plays of 20 yards or more. Who cares about “major explosiveness”.

If LSU controls its turnovers, stops the run reasonably well, and rushes the passer, we will be in the playoffs.

It’s the offensive line. A bunch of little wimpy boys playing paddy cake.

Slow, deliberate drives on offense lets your defense rest and minimizes the plays the opponent can run. That is a Championship formula. But improving red zone TD rate would definitely help this final 4 game run. Burnng 7 minutes on the clock for 3 points makes it difficult to win close games.

Well, that is one opinion.........

Those 4.4 yards turn out to be a 1st down every 3 plays.

Well we were missing Dez for most of the season, so I expect that to change. Our offense looked the best it has all season vs Auburn.

I can spin numbers like this against ANY team’s chances of winning it all. LSU’s numbers stack up well against ANY of the top contenders. LSU is averaging 40.1 points and 510 yards per game, while allowing just 16 points and 258.3 yards. Those are legitimate strengths on both sides of the ball. You can cherry-pick a statistic or weakness from Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, or anyone else and make the same argument about why they won’t win it all. I could play that game with every single one of them. Really lazy article.

More like lazy reading comprehension.

The article isn’t an assessment of the team or targeted at LSU. It’s literally highlighting their biggest weakness to this point that could be an impediment to winning the title.
