Talented five-star safety Jacoby Mathews announced Friday that he is decommitting from LSU and has reopened his recruitment.

The Ponchatoula, LA native originally gave his verbal pledge to Tigers back in November of 2020, picking LSU over schools like Alabama, Georiga, Mississippi State, Texas, Oklahoma, and Michigan State.

Why we all let some high school kid hold us hostage with his commitment is disgusting

With NIL these recruiting commitments mean nothing anymore. Who can pay the most will be the schools that get them. Buy the best players. It is completely where college sports are going.

This kid never seemed like a firm commitment. There was much talk about him not sticking from the start and I will leave it at that. It’s better than having him switch on signing day. Adios.

Welp, better than gaining a DB and losing an OT...so there's that.

You got to earn respect. You’re losing trust too.

"The Man Above" says to honor your commitment and to not make promises you won't keep. Hypocrites have too much power.

You have to earn respect...and wishy washy types are not worthy of respect. Be a man and own up to your word or don't give it so easily.

Thanks to NIL it is now 'ALL ABOUT da MONEY'! This can work both ways for LSU #GEAUXLSUNIL

It will work both ways for everybody. Wait until a recruit takes money and changes his mind or leaves a school after he takes money before he ever plays. Getting a kid on Campus really means almost nothing anymore. Say a kid goes to school ‘A’ and isn’t a local kid and is not happy with his playing time etc. He can be continually recruited and leave. Therefore, a team’s depth is always under attack. This “free agency” is actually more of a threat than paying these kids.

“Respect it”. No thank you. I respect the players who honor their commitment.

Do you feel that way about players who flip to LSU?

I'm really concerned that all of this NIL stuff is going to honestly ruin my desire to watch college athletics. The fact that they are amateur athletes was the huge appeal to me. I hope I'm wrong but it doesn't look good.

I don’t count “commitments” until they have been suspended from the team
