Two great options
Measure circumference of waist around belly button and track that along with weight. Could be recompositiin Also need to be 100% sure you are in a calorie deficit if trying to lose weight with or without meds.
If in alot of pain you will be glad you did it. Will have some mobility limitations but should be pain free when its all said and done and have the majority of function.

3 to 6 months to full recovery
Strength training is one of the best things you can do for longevity much better than just stretching.

doesnt necessarily need to be at the intensity and volume of crossfit as you age but highly recommend neverstopping it
Any teacher should be able to give him that because all he needs is the basics. I would run if they start getting too technical or advanced
I would say 6 is pretty young for true lessons maybe just basic grip and setup stuff but thats it

Make some like games chipping into a hula hoop for points, or chipping and putting to targets not just the hole, let him hit his driver as far as he can, play other sports that involve hitting and throwing, get him swinging and moving athletically first and foremost.
I would highly recommend it. Everything you need to improve your game and your health and his second and third phase plans will make it even better.
Nail grip and set up. Next prioritize contact Look up adam young golf has a bunch of free info and affordable courses improving contact with ball and ground
