Would anyone retire in Costa Rica?

What are the pros and cons? I see where a lot of Americans retire or semi retire down there.
I have never been but may take a trip down there in the near future to check it out.

Considering I don't speak Spanish, no. I do like that the official state religion of Costa Rica is a Catholicism though.

I've never been but have several friends that love it. There are big ex-pat communities down there so plenty of english speakers. And apparently, a lot of costa ricans speak english.

You can always learn it. It's not that hard and part of the fun of acclimating to a foreign culture.

shite, I'm only mid-30s and I'm already trying to retire in Costa Rica.
There are beaches, rain forests, volcanos. You can zip-line through the jungles, white water raft, ride 4-wheelers on the beach, learn how to surf, monkeys are everywhere.
People are great, food is really good, coffee is the very best. Fresh tropical fruit grows wherever you look...we had tons of pineapple, mango, papaya.
VERY close second in terms of favorite places I've ever visited, and it was only edged out by Japan.

This wouldn't be much of an issue. Lots of expats and English is widely used.
I don't have any plans to retire abroad, but if things change, Costa Rica would be near the top.

Sorry, I abandoned the thread. After Covid wiped out my Italy/ Austria trip this spring, I am itching to get out of the office and go somewhere. Started looking at all the expat websites and stuff and it got me interested.
If I like it it may be something i want to do part time or full time when I can finally retire.
Would love to rent a place for a month or two to see if it is for me.

I would. I felt very safe there. Almost everyone working in the towns speaks English. Tamarindo is so Americanized that it barely felt like I was out of the US with the exception of some places not having AC and there roads not all being as good. There are lots of condo developments in Tamarindo that cater to expats. It's one of the few places I've traveled that I felt I could easily live there.

Let's not go overboard, here. Lots of good fruit. Chilero is delicious. Otherwise, the food is pretty mediocre. Not a great food culture, but there's lots of other awesome things about CR.

The biggest issue I could see would be health care as you get older.
I wanted to retire in the Caribbean but my wife has a few medical issues and I worry she would not get quality care there...

Rent for a couple months to see if it fits you.

Pro's - i watched a video of a guy building an inground pool for under $3,000. I laughed at the thought of it being that cheap with the amount of concrete and rebar he used, but then he said he was in Costa Rica and that's why it was so cheap.

I’d be looking for something a little more stable.

He said retiring, not creating a startup.

Great if you don't need healthcare
Older I get, I would not want my life to depend on Costa Rican healthcare.
