Worst Travel Mistake

What’s the worst travel mistake you have made that cost you a lot of time / money or the chance to see something you planned to see?

Getting too drunk and having a hangover the next day where I didn't want to leave my room.

I'll go with booking flights at really inconvenient times (aka 530am) and expecting to still do everything I planned for the evening with the same energy

Taking kids under 5 to anything you want them to have memories of.

My wife and I were going to St. Lucia on June 3rd (I believe it was 2013), and we had to drive to Houston because that’s where we were flying out of (recent college graduates so for us it was worth the savings.) We woke up at about 6am to drive to Houston. The plan was to go, spend the day in Houston, stay at my cousin’s house and have a nice dinner with them, then wake up in the morning and go to the airport.
Right before we packed up the car to leave, my wife checked my passport. I don’t know why, but she did. It had expired on May 31st, 3 days prior. For some reason I thought it was good until May of the next year.
I had to drive immediately from BR to NOLA, spend a ton of money to do a same day passport, and drive back to BR, pick her back up, and then go to Houston. She was rightfully furious and it was a massive clusterfrick.
However, the end of the story is that we made the flight the next day and had a wonderful trip.
So all in all, could have been so much worse, but it was certainly not the start to the relaxing trip we envisioned. I cannot imagine what hellfire would have rained down upon me if we had been at the airport and they didn’t let me through.

Well, I'd say picking any trip SOLELY for your "kids' memories".

I've learned to just go ahead and book the hotel night before my arrival if I'm going to get somewhere super early hours before check-in.
Pretty miserable to show up at a full hotel after traveling early in the morning with nowhere to sleep.
Only happens on international trips where timing becomes priority.

1. Spent Carnival in Salvador, Brazil and overslept for my flight. Cost about 400 bucks to rebook.
2. Going to a wedding in South Carolina a couple weeks ago. Im currently working in Mexico, and after getting to the airport, I realized I left my passport at my house. Cost a lot of money to spend 3 hours going to and from the airport, plus I had to rebook the flight

1. Assumed I could get a camping spot at a National Park. Because heaven forbid they let you reserve them ahead of time.
Wound up sleeping in a gravel lot in Terlingua our first night in Big Bend.
2. In 2012 we went to NYC. While we were there, my debit card stops working. After a couple of times we called the bank. They said it has been shut down because of the out of town activity.
I said “why wouldn’t you call me first?”
“We called your house”
Luckily my wife’s card hadn’t been stopped yet.
I didn’t have a normal credit card at the time. So we would’ve been f’d.

Funny thing is I'm not taking my advice on my next trip. Going to take a night bus from Bagan to Yangon getting in at around 5am.
I figure I'm traveling with a friend who can take the beating better than my wife, and secondly, I booked a nice hotel that may have some space. Being a cheap arse.

Ate street food in Bangkok my first night there and got food poisoning worse than I could imagine it would be.

Waiting too long to book tickets/hotels for a trip that’s already got defined dates. I’m bad about putting it off and have gotten burned a few times.

Accidentally booked my flight at 8p instead of 8a. Get the the airport nice and early, walk up to the departures board, and to my surprise no flight at 8a. Check my ticket again and realized my mistake

Got cajoled into a Carnival cruise with another couple. I was the only one of the 4 who did not want to go. The other couple bailed for health reasons at the last minute, and my wife was seasick in bed within hours.
I was essentially on a cruise—that I never wanted to go on — by myself. Did a lot of angry drinking.

This. In Galway I bought tickets to the Aran Islands TWICE on subsequent weekends. Both times I proceeded to get hammered and literally missed the boat because I slept in.
Never made it to the islands and still regret it.
