Recently won a trip to Rone thru my company. There’s a chance my wife and I will fly out a couple days early before the work events start. If we were to fly into Rome 2 days early and take the train somewhere…where should that somewhere be?? Thanks!

I'd make the time for Venice if you haven't been, or if you have no plans of returning to Italy. It's 4 hours by train so you'd have to consider that.

If you're looking for somewhere closer, Florence is only about 1.5hr from Rome.

ETA: I recommend Italo over Trenitalia/Frecciarossa btw. Prices are usually way cheaper on Italo, but I'd still compare. Only route I've ever seen cheaper on FR is Rome to Milan

Your wife would love the Amalfi Coast or Cinque Terre.

Venice and Assisi were some of my favorite places to visit when we went a few years back.

Can you fly into another city like Florence or Venice and then take the train to Rome and meet up with the group?

Just pack light because they don't screw around at the stops.

If you have to leave Rome for two days, I would suggest Florence which is an easy train ride away. Venice would be my second choice, followed by Positano. Florence is the easiest to get to.

Thanks for the replies. Definitely don’t have to leave Rome, but I’m thinking I’d prefer not to stay 6 days just in Rome. Florence seems appealing and easy to get to.
I was thinking maybe we’d go near the coast for a night or 2… Any thoughts on Naples?

Go to Florence. Do NOT got to Venice. Nothing but a tourist trap there

I’d suggest Venice. Simply bc you only have 2 extra days. 2days in Venice is more than enough to experience what there is and never have to return. Venice isn’t that great but worth visiting once.

If you go to Florence for two days, be prepared for a return trip bc you will love it. 2 days is not nearly enough. So 2 days will cost about $10k bc it will cause a return trip. A week in Tuscany would be great.

I disagreed with your first sentence until I started reading. You are correct about Florence. It is my favorite city in the world.

I would not make Naples a destination. You can take a train to Naples from Rome and travel an hour further down the coast to Positano. I would much rather stay there than Naples.

Pompeii is a better option for a day trip from Rome. Don’t stay in Naples overnight

A lot depends on the time of year that you are going. I would avoid Venice regardless of the time of year. My least favorite city in Italy.

If it will be June or July, I would take a train to Florence or to Sorrento. Don't rent a car to drive to Florence, because cars are not favored in the City. You can take a high speed non-stop train to Florence and be right in the heart of the city. Great food, sites, walking, etc.

Sorrento is a mere train ride to Naples, then switch trains to Sorrento. Probably a 2.5 - 3 hour train ride each direction. Sorrento's high season is August/September and very crowded and expensive.

If you want to rent a car, you could just drive to a few cities in Tuscany (Montepulciano, Perugia, Terni, etc). The countryside is gorgeous and easy to navigate (although getting out of Rome in a rental car is a challenge)

I love Florence, Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast. We were just in Florence/Tuscany countryside for two weeks last March/April.

We’ll be there in May.
Leaving DFW on Monday, arrive in Rome on Tuesday morning. Scheduled to be back in Rome on Wednesday evening which gives us about 36+ hours from the time we land to do something.
This thread is making me think that that something is going to be a trip to Florence. Probably won’t be enough time there from midday Tuesday until Wednesday evening…but we’ll try to make the most of it.

There is enough to do in Rome that I would just stay there for the extra days. Will make logistics easier and the trip more relaxing!

Sorrento, Positano or one of the other coastal towns instead.

I don’t disagree, though I do understand the desire to see another city/locale while there. Maybe a day trip as an alternative?
