Just saw this. I’d stay in Rome.

If you could change your flight, I would fly into Florence, then take a train to Rome from there on Wednesday. That would probably give you an extra 1/2 day in Florence. May is a great time for Florence.

Ok. Maybe I’ll do this. I really don’t want to stay in Rome for 6 days. So I was thinking 1.5-2 days in Florence would be best.
Now I’ve got to get suggestions on what to do while in Florence. I’ve got plenty Marriott points and there are 2 properties (St. Regis & Westin) right on the river, so we’ll most likely be staying at one of those.

Florence is one of my favorite cities in the world, but that would be a break-neck turnaround. If I only have 36 hours or so to burn, I would just spend the extra time in Rome and do a dawn to evening day trip from Rome to Pompeii, Pompeii to Naples to check out the “secret” Pompeii exhibit at the museum, grab a pizza, and then head back to Rome.
I think anything else is going to be more trouble than it’s worth on that short of a time table.
Eta: if you can fly into Florence without much aggravation, that changes the calculus a bit, but it would still be tight.

So many people have said that. What are people’s favorite things to do, see, visit, etc…? I’m fitting Florence into this trip one way or another. If it means flying out on Sunday instead of Monday so that we have 2.5 days there then so be it

I'll second what everyone is saying and try to fly into Florence and spend time there.
There's no way you can make it to Sorrento/Amalfi coast and back in 36 hours and have any kind of enjoyable experience.
You could also take a day trip and visit somewhere like Orvieto or potentially even make it up to Assisi or Perugia. Those are relatively short train rides from Rome. That would be doable in 2 days.

So, you have all the tourist things (Uffizi, Accadamia, etc, etc), and they are awesome and shouldn’t be missed. But when I say it’s one of my favorite cities, it’s because of the vibe. The architecture, the food, the culture, etc. It’s just an awesome city to experience, even outside of the postcard sites.

Another vote for Florence. You could hit Duomo or the statue of David but honestly enjoyed just walking around the most. Ponte Vecchio at night was fun to stop by. There was a guy playing music and a crowd gathered around singing along. Naples is only worth it for the pizza and you don't really have time to hit Amalfi or Capri. If you can't fly into Florence the train is a quick and solid experience. The train is the one thing in Italy you can count on being prompt.

Good to know! I’ve read that it’s best to just buy a train ticket while there in case my flight arrival is delayed.

Yeah we never had an issue getting a ticket to the train, just make sure you have the right date and time when you get it. I know someone who purchased the wrong date on accident and got on the train for the date they intended and they charge you a crazy fee.

Agree - take the train to Florence - we hired a private guide for the day and we did all the sites in short order - Have to see The David and walk the city- my favorite

Leaving DFW on Monday, arrive in Rome on Tuesday morning. Scheduled to be back in Rome on Wednesday evening which gives us about 36+ hours from the time we land to do something.
Leave Friday after work and get there Saturday morning.

Dunno baw. You’re gonna kill yourself with the travel. Get there jet lagged, and then train and up-and-down. Rome is amazing and you could spend the entire week there looking at things. Relax and just do the sites each day. However, if that’s your goal, it’s not a far train ride may be an hour and a half. We’ve done it several times. Recommendation I would have is go to Orvietto and stay for a night and not go to Florence. Florence is a destination all to its own and you should savor it. At least one week in Florence to see it all and visit Tuscany.

Where would you stay here?
I’m assuming the train runs thru here from Rome?
Thanks for the suggestion!

Sorry, just saw this. We were on the way from Florence to Rome. It's a train stop. Took a cab up to the top of the mountain where the town is (they built a fortress on top of the rock).
Things To Do.
We stayed in the Grand Hotel Italia. Very nice. Centrally located. Many options on Booking.com or AirBNB though.

Rome is great.
Milan, Florence and Venice are very nice, too. Florence and anywhere in Tuscany are can’t miss.

Update: we’re going to leave the US on Monday 5/13 and arrive in Rome on the morning of 5/14. We have 3 nights to kill until we have to be back in Rome on the evening of 5/17.
How difficult would it be to get from ROM to Positano or Amalfi? Travel there on Tuesday (we arrive at ROM at 8:25 AM) and then spend Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights there (wherever there may be).
If that’s too much of a chore, we’re not tied to doing that. Tuscany could/would also be an option.
