I've done Birmingham to Ann Arbor. Horrible drive.

Though Cincinnati was a cool looking city. I don't know why, but I had never really seen a picture of the skyline before. Really cool architecture along with those beautiful bridges. Traffic was hell.

The open farmland in Ohio was beautiful once you get past the gigantic Jesus statue.

frick Toledo and all things around it.

In college we drove from Chapel Hill to San Antonio in 24 hours, scalped some final four tickets, had a steak, then drove on to New Orleans to watch the Saturday game. After the loss and lots of partying we drove straight back to Chapel Hill on Sunday.

Longest solo trip would be El Paso to Spokane. I made it all the way to Missoula before caving in and getting a hotel. (Napped in a Denver Walmart parking lot and random rest stops in WAY and MT)

6500 miles in 13 days on my motorcycle and camped almost every night. Hit every state out west and a lot of the NPs. Did it alone. Sevweeal people wanted to go as well, but the closer the trip got, more people dropped out. Was a great trip though.

I drove from San Francisco to Skagway, AK pretty much straight through. I spent one night in a motel in Blaine, WA. Crossed the border the next day, went through Vancouver and Whistler, then to Dawson Creek. Took the Alcan Hwy to Whitehorse and then down to Skagway. Slept in my car at few rest areas for a couple hours a few times. It was late June, so the days were really long in the higher latitudes. I was excited about making the trip and there was probably about 20 hours of daylight, so it got a little bit disorienting. I ended up spending the entire Summer (and part of Fall) traveling around Alaska and western Canada. I got home to New Orleans in October.

Probably my longest straight through drive was Madisonville (N.O. Area) to Toronto. I left on a Friday and slept for a couple of hours in the car before dawn in Port Huron, MI. Woke up and drove to Toronto. Checked into the Hilton Garden Inn and went to a Memorial Service for a friend who was killed in a skydiving accident. Spent the night, checked out, went to the CN Tower and Niagra Falls and headed home. Was able to get the Saints game on the radio in NY! Got home Monday a.m. I was gone less than 72 hours.

The MSY-YYZ airfare on a couple of days notice was ~$1,100 and the flight times/connections were fricked up. The crazy thing is that the guy's parents flew in from Ireland for considerably less than the fare from New Orleans.

How comfortable are motorcycles on long trips?

I have been tempted in my older age to get me bike but I don't know about doing those long trips.

I even signed up for one of those training schools they have at the HD dealers and then backed out.

2 months on the road from Arkansas to British Columbia via detassling corn for a month in Iowa. We were in a hurry to get back and drove straight through when we came back to Arkansas. Yes. Straight through from British Columbia to Arkansas. Was brutal.

Baton Rouge, La to Oregon and back. It was over 2 weeks and we hung around for a few days at a few different places out west. Had to change the oil in the car when we got to Oregon, we were at the mile limit for the change.

It's amazing how that happens, had 3 people willing to tag along when I went to Cali last time. All dropped, glad they did because I find I meet a lot more random people when I on my own.

Depends on how much prep work you do. I ride a BMW GS on most of my long distance trips. I have a Russell Day Long saddle which keeps me from getting saddle sore even on 16+ hour ride days. The bike itself is very smooth and can be setup to prevent soreness and relax. Very easy to ride bike that can handle curves. Second part is getting your gear sorted. On a trip out west you can go from above 90s to snow and below 30s in the same day. Have to be able to adapt to either and stay dry. There is a ton of gear out there that you can find what works for you. I go back and forth between a Rev'it suit and an Aerostitch. Both work well for me.
