Yes it is you clown. Any place that has political assassinations via car bomb as the norm and hosts the worlds most wanted terrorist is an absolute shithole. It’s a borderline failed state.

needs it's own thread. That is a gorgeous vintage train, and it is also my dream trip.

Been to SA - Cape Town multiple times. Feels like New Orleans with scenery to me. It’s amazing and everyone should go.

Not really a s-hole but want to visit is Chilie.

I have a cousin who has traveled pretty extensively due to work, and he said that Istanbul is the coolest city that he's been to. We considered going there for our honeymoon back in 2013, but there was a suicide bombing outside of a church that occurred while we were in the planning stages. Got the nix from me after that

ETA: seeing the pyramids and Sphinx would be really cool, but I don't know if I'm down to go to Egypt

Some people are completely clueless. Jordan is nothing at all like a sh**hole country. Petra completely lives up to the hype, but Jordan is a country where it's safe to pick up hitchhikers (only country where I've ever done that).

Jordan's a great country to visit, even besides Petra. The Crusades-era castles, the Roman ruins at Jerash, the Dead Sea -- I spent a week and wished I had a couple more days.

Cape Town is one of the most geographically blessed cities in the world. Had a San Francisco vibe to me in that sense.

Istanbul is very cool. Might be same incident, but there was a bombing I believe in Sultan Ahmet Park around that time, and it would be jarring as that is right between the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia.

Those two, the Roman Cistern, the remnants of the Hippodrome and the Grand Bizaar are all like a block apart so that's tourist central.

There's a difference between a place being a shithole that you wouldn't visit if you were 18 with a group of guys, and a place you wouldn't visit with your wife if you have a family. There's a lot of places I would have no issues going to and feel completely safe booking, but its just not worth it with a wife and kids when there's much safer places out there I've never been.

And Romania..

These are some of the countries I would use as guidance Level 4 countries (minus covid precautions) :

Libya
Russia
N Korea
Myanmar
Syria
Kosovo
Somalia
Iraq
South Sudan
Iran
Yemen
Venezuela

Iran looks like an awesome place geographically. Shame it is what it is.

Definitely. Our plan was to relegate ourselves to places with good healthcare while our kids are really young. And loosen up as they get older. May not make sense but it seems easier to communicate and recover I presume for a 16 year old with food poisoning than a 5 year old for instance.

Gotta feel like Lebonon should be at the top of the list. Maybe not right now, though I haven't been paying attention, but its been an on and off highlight of the middle east to visit for me. No way in hell I'd go there right now though, and I'm not sure that will ever change in our lifetime.
