The SWA subreddit is great reading right now.

They have pilots and crew stuck at airports too and aren't paying for their hotels/meals.

Pilots and crew with empty planes just sitting there. The crew is calling into SWA to try and get into service but having 10+ hr hold times.

It's fricking insane

There's a stranded passenger at MDW saying he's passing the time by digging through all of the luggage piled up everywhere and calling the #'s on the tags to let the owners know where their luggage is.

Really wish we had high speed rail in this country

Thanks, I'll head out there tomorrow.
I don't buy much, maybe about $100 worth for the kids to shoot off at midnight.

Who's got the best prices? Should I go to Laplace, Gretna, Slidell (would rather not have to go through Nola East and get shot)

Jesus dude, do you really need that $25 right now? Are you that poor? Just wait.

I returned an unopened Galaxy S22+to Best Buy to rebuy for the $800 trade in credit. The clerk kept telling me I don't want to do that b/c the $800+ wouldn't be refunded to my credit card for 5-6 business days. I told him IDGAF b/c I'm not poor
Same here. I think as they get older(mine are both in late 70's), it's harder to do those things like vacuum, dust, wipe down surfaces etc. They don't leave out dirty dishes, but they do have crap everywhere. Do you become a mini hoarder as you get older?

They can afford a maid or we, the kids, would even get one for them, but they're not having it.

This
I did all of my shopping back in October. I even wrapped everything back in October.

The fun part about Christmas this year will be that I don't remember most of what I bought, so it'll be a surprise to me too

Oh so the expensive stuff. Got it.

5 lb bag chicken strips($14)
Ground meat ($2.99 lb when we bought 3 approx 7lb packages and froze in lb increments)

Mustard isn't expensive, neither is salad dressing or mayo

Also have 3 chuck roasts in our chest freezer that I bought when they were on sale for like $1.99 lb. Throw that in the crock pot with carrots, potatos, and celery. A good hearty meal.

$80 a week is doable if you plan. We also use the HEB coupons or Kroger coupons they send to us for only the products we buy. We aren't eating t-bones every night, but we're not eating ramen noodles every night either.

This is such a load of horse shite. No two people can live off of $80 a week in groceries right now.

Went to HEB yesterday. Bill was $76 and change

1. Big Container of fresh spinach

2. 2 cucumbers
3. Red onion
4. 2 bags of bacon bits
5. 18 eggs
6. 1lb garlic sasuage
7. 2 bags tortillas
8. 2lb smoked turkey
9. Package of Swiss cheese
10. 2 bags of chips
11. Box of raisan bran
12. Container of almond milk
13. 2 cans of blue runner
14. 24 bottles of spring water
15. Container of half & half
16. A bag of riced cauliflower

That's all I can remember
Not counting stuff I already have like mayo, mustard, salad dressing, frozen chicken strips from Costco, ground beef from Costco etc

Thinking one person needs to eat $800/month of rice, beans, and chicken is just as absurd, tbf

 my husband and I spend about $80 week on groceries, give or take. Neither of us eats breakfast during the week. Just coffee. We both bring our lunches(usually a smoked turkey wrap with swiss), a bag of chips and a water.

Dinner could be a salad(bag of spinach, tomatos, cucumber, boiled egg, bacon bits, blackened chicken strips(5 lbs Costco $14), red beanss with sausage and rice, pot roast(bought when on sale for like $7 a roast), mashed cauliflower, frozen broccoli, etc. Spaghetti and meatballs, tacos, grilled chicken breasts(big bag from Costco) etc We decide what we're eating for the week and buy accordingly. We buy whatever veggies are in season, look good and are on sale. We buy store brand stuff like shredded cheese. We don't eat a ton of premade meals. We meal prep whenever possible. This works for us.

What is an 18 yr old eating that costs $800 month? I got by on Mac & cheese, frozen pizza, grilled chicken, hamburgers, hamburger helper, ramen, chips, cereal etc
This is all such BS. I was in my early 20's in Nola in the late augts. I made $12 an hr. No benefits. 1 week unpaid vacay. I had a roommate. My car was 10 yrs old. I didn't lease a 3 series so I could give the illusion of being "rich". I didn't buy $500 handbags or $500 designer shoes. My cellphone was a budget model. My TV wasn't a 55" flat screen. I brownbagged it to work everyday. I saved everything I could and gained experience and moved up.

I still live frugally. My husband and I live in a 1600 sq ft 50's ranch. We're DINKS. We do take nice vacations, but we find deals. We'll both retire by 60 with plenty in retirement.

The younger generations expect to have everything nice like they had growing up. They're 30thousanaires.

My parents always told me about buying their first house when they got married. Other than their bedroom set(a wedding present) they had no furniture. They'd save up and when they finally had enough, they'd buy a piece of furniture, eventually furnishing the whole house.

Do you honestly think Gen Z or millennials are doing this? OP said the guy they had was spending money or his car, daily lunches, and a folding cell phone? They expect everything nice like they had growing up .. What their parents worked for

$15 an hour isn't great, but it's still double min wage for an entry level warehouse job. The benefits dont sound bad either.

I was talking to a buddy who's 22 yr old recent college grad just bought a house. I commented that her first job must be paying really well. He said it was b/c he gave her $275k when she graduated college. I was like what?!? This guy does alright, but not $275k laying around alright.

He said she got into Metairie Academy when she was 4 and saved him 12 yrs of Catholic school tuition (she progressed through JP's magnet system). Got a full ride to SMU as well. He said he saved what he would have paid for her education in an account in her name. When she graduated SMU, he told her she had this money.

I actually think this is an awesome idea if the parents' can swing it. Catholic schools cost like $7k a yr now. College, even state schools, aren't cheap.

What a great gift to his kid.
I'm in medical supply purchasing and logistics and it's insane. I could have predicted this last year, but the CEO's etc were caught off guard. Major shortages in everything from needles, to gloves, Covid test kits, various tubes for blood testing etc. It's insane. Our clients are trying to over order to compensate for the backorders and delays, which is another issue in of itself.

Also, instead of acknowledging this supply shite show, upper management just keeps bitching and asking for us to make supplies appear out of thin air

Question for you guys over 40 who grew up in the city..... Back in the early 90's when Nola was setting murder records and it seemed like almost every neighborhood was going to crap except for Lakeview/Lakefront area, was the mood this bad about the future?

I was just outta high school and going to Tulane. I was out drinking every weekend at places like Rendon Inn(a terrible neighborhood), Ms Mae's, going to the Quarter driving down Freret St instead of St Charles to get down there b/c it was quicker. Passed by many projects at 2-3am on the way somewhere.

Was regularly wandering the Quarter drunk with my friends, other white kids at 4-5am. And no, we never felt scared or unsafe. Probably b/c we were kids and stupid. I know my parents used to have a fit when I'd tell them we went to Rendon for Drink till You Drown. It was in a shitty neighborhood off of Earhart.

Not always true. 1800 sq ft home built in the 50's. My taxes are $5800 this year.

If she does. All krewes should move to Jeff Parish. Sure Metairie sucks, but it'd be worth it to give the big frick you to that count of a Mayor
I was. Great ball. They went all out. St Aug band marching thru was awesome!
