I want to know what is expected. We will be staying at the Excellence Punta Cana. I have never been to an all inclusive resort and am just wanting to know what is customary.

It’s customary to tip $1000 per day

If your by the pool area, give one of the cabana bartenders a $20 and they will keep your glass full the whole time.

In restaurants or bars, I tried to tip every other drink like I do in the US but didn’t really find it necessary

Many people won't tip $1 the entire time. Rather then $1 o2 $2 every other drink that will be forgotten.....give one guy or gal a $10 or $20 early on in the day and they will be sure to make sure you're taken care of. Especially if you have a swim up room or are out on the beach and want someone to check up on you. When dining, we always left something if the service was good and more if it was great but our biggest tip went to one of the entertainment staff. This guy was awesome, remembered us by name, opened up to us about himself on a personal level, always found us ands saved us us great seats by the pool and in the shows, etc. We went with another couple for like 5 days and by the second day we each gave him $100 and he made sure someone was taking care of us at all times. That being said, it was totally unnecessary and we certainly didnt need to do it but every night he would ask...."So, what's your plan tomorrow?" If we said hanging in the pool behind our room he would make sure he had someone coming by first thing in the morning.

Someone here once linked to a blog by a couple who retired early and moved to Mexico. It is a great read.

One topic is tipping at all-inclusives. Here is what the husband said in a 2017 post:

quote:

If you’ve ever been to a quality all-inclusive resort, you know that the employees bend over backwards to ensure that you have a wonderful vacation experience. These men and women usually work a six-day work week for very little pay. How little? I’m glad you asked.

I checked a few job sites online and there were several listings for positions at all-inclusives. The average starting salary for both waiters and bartenders was only between $4,000 -$6,000 pesos a month. In U.S. dollars, that equates to $226 -$339 dollars a month. The salaries for other positions, such as concierge and housekeeper, weren’t much better.

He posts his tip rates for various employees and services. Not a lot, he admits he is cheap, but enough to make a big difference for the employees.

I like to tip our waiter/waitress by wherever we are posted up for the day like 20 bucks first thing in the morning. They will take care of you.

I also keep a lot of 1's to tip here and there as service is good.

$1 bills go a long way to getting service.

I know this will get downvoted, but tipping is by far my least favorite part of an AI.

You go to an AI so you don't have to pay for drinks or food and can just relax and do nothing for a few days.

Having to carry cash around all of the time and constantly think about tipping is a pain in the arse.

I still do it, and realize how little the people get paid. But I do dislike it.

There are resorts that pay their people more and actively disallow tipping.

It's good to tip housekeeping a few bucks as well.

We stayed at Excellence El Carmen in January. Just tip the bartender/server $10 for your first drinks and they will take care of you the rest of the day. We had a great time with limited capacity around the resort.

I remember on day 1 at Excellence, I told our room attendant I didnt want the Johnny Walker Red or the soft drinks in our fridge. I asked if she could swap it out for an extra bottle of vodka and a couple extra beers and bottles of water and gave her $10.

She looked at me like I was stupid, rejected the $10, walked to my luggage, put the johnny walker in my suitcase, plus a bottle of absolute then said "you get vodka and beer every day, no tip"

I tipped her anyway at the end but she was great

I wonder how often bartenders at all inclusive see a tip at 8am and say to themselves, “great this mo fo now wants me to suck his D all damn day”. Lol. I agree with the above approach, but I can tell you the hospitality industry is full of hustlers and when everyone does the same thing you don’t stick out.

We went to Excellence Punta Cana for our honeymoon and loved it. They renovated the resort the month after we went, so I'm sure there are nice updates since then.

I brought $100 in 1 dollar bills for the week.

I've never flown and spend overnight at an all-inclusive. However, usually when I cruise, I do a day trip to one at one of the ports.

I find $20 per adult, the first time they bring you food or drink, has them very thankful and constantly looking after you. If the service is good, and it usually is, I usually give another $20 per adult when we are headed back to the ship.

I tip with $2 bills in foreign countries. Two bucks is a reasonable gratuity for taxi etc. Because it’s not a one and tonsime could closely resemble a $5 it is usually received well. I have to order them special at bank.

The better all inclusive a actually have policies against tipping but people still try to do it. Couples Resorts will even fir employees if they accept tips.

If it’s all inclusive you probably won’t be taking your wallet on the beach. So if you’re at the swim up bar tipping isn’t expected. Maybe at dinner you could if you want. But if it is allowed I’d get to know the people who give you good service and discreetly give them a tip.
