Give me some tips. I'm expecting to be traveling on my own a lot over the next year. What were your favorite destinations and just any general tips for having a good time alone?

Chicago is always fun solo. I'd walk all over the city. Take transit all around as well. Eventually hit up a few places for a drink - maybe meet new people or just enjoy company alone.

Colorado - lots of hiking of course.

I'd recommend focusing on a few places to go at your destination and otherwise just exploring at random. The best times are just going out exploring without a ton of planning. Also, I also bring my music with me if I just want to focus on myself.

Europe is solid and you’ll see so many cities and meet so many other solo travelers.

SE Asia is also incredible.

Are you single? I got on a couple of dating apps when I went to Europe a few years ago and met a few locals and other travelers that resulted in some fun evenings.

I always travel alone now and actually prefer it.

My advice is to just be open to what experiences the location will give you and embrace your flexibility.

Don’t sleep on opportunities to connect with people on the plane or airport. Super easy places to start a conversation.

Wear your school colors / or logo occasionally. You might be surprised how many other fans of your team are roaming around out there.

Take business cards with you. I always forget this.

Good tip. I met a couple from south Australia a few years ago in New Orleans. The guy gave me his card and invited me to come stay at their ranch sometime to hunt kangaroos.

I’ve been to Los Angeles, key west, Boston, NYC , Iceland, Cancun all solo in the recent years

I’m an only child so it doesn’t bother me doing stuff alone .

I love the freedom to do what I want

strike up conversations in public places. Not exclusive to traveling alone but people are friendly if you will engage them. We were in telluride last month and started talking to a couple at the next table at lunch and they invited us over to their house

just be engaging and enthusiastic which is a great way to go thru life anyway

I've never had any issues traveling solo. My favorite trip was 25 days in Australia. I had many things planned out, but left open days to do random things, or rest and wash clothes.

I wore my cowboy hat everywhere and my LSU shirts on game days (November) and all of the Aussies wanted to visit with a Texan.

If you’re under 40 and going out of the country, stay in a hostel. Get a private room. Good way to meet fellow travelers and hang out. Also the hostels usually run tours and have other events.

Hostel I stayed at in Iceland had 3 sets of bunk beds in it in the room I was in .

First night.. it was me… and 5 girls in it- 2 different pairs and another solo girl . That was like an episode of Punk’d. I was like do I fart? Orrrr what’s the protocol here.

Woke up and this girl was clearly fingering herself and cumming. It was wild .

Started doing some solo travel in the past year and I liked it so much that now I'm not sure I want to do anything else

I'm very introverted, but solo travel kinda forces you to talk to strangers and meet new people, especially if you stay at guesthouses or hostels. Also, when you run into another solo traveler it's easy to strike up a conversation.

I went to Iceland this summer solo and had a great time. There were plenty of other solo travelers everywhere I went so it didn't seem strange to be by myself.

Go to places you wouldn't be comfortable taking your wife in the future. You can always go to europe with a woman. Central/south america, africa, middle east are places I have gone solo.

I traveled a lot within US for work when I was single and would always go up a weekend early or stay an extra weekend to experience places I would likely never go back to.
The weird thing is eating alone but I would find a bar/grill type place and do that most of the time or get something quick while sightseeing.

I've done a fair bit of solo traveling. I prefer it because you get to do everything YOU want to do on your on schedule and budget.

If you want to be social, here are some tips depending on your age and lifestyle:

Group tours - they can suck if they are long term, but I generally like them as day tours to places outside of the city. You meet other people, have an informed guide and all of the logistics are taken care of. Even if it's not great, you only wasted about six hours and 60 bucks. Viator is a good resource to find guided day tours from any city.

Free walking tours - many international cities have a free walking tour that meets up at a central location and walks you around to some of the main and hidden tourist attractions. The walking guide will be a colorful local who will give you lots of info and historical tidbits. At the end of the tour, he will pass around a hat for tips. Most of the people you meet on these tours are fellow solo travelers.

Food tours - I usually do these in lieu of a nice meal out. Once again a local cuisine expert will chaperone a group of tourists around to several different restaurants they have prearranged deals with. Not cheap but you get to sample smaller portions of lots of different local dishes, drinks and desserts. Saves you from going out to eat at every night and they know the best places to go. Sometimes the tour will finish at a bar and everybody will just hang around and drink for the night.

Pub crawls - definitely a younger and rowdier crowd. Basically bar hopping with an organized set group until everyone is drunk.

Hostels - double edge sword. On the plus side they are cheap and you get to meet lots of other solo travelers. On the downside, you have to sleep in a crappy room with them in bunk beds. Some hostels have private rooms. And I've noticed the quality of the rooms and the clientele greatly improves if you shell out another 5-10 bucks for the "nice" hostel as opposed to the "party" hostel (unless you are 22 and want to party every night and hookup with crazy strangers).

American sports bar - a lot of international tourist spots will have a bar that caters to American tourists wanting to watch the weekend football games or another big US sporting event. Great way to meet folks from back home.

This. Food is phenomenal and while the flight can be long and expensive you make it back up with cheap food, lodging and entertainment. You can live like that eastern Europe scene in EuroTrip but probably even better.

Downside is that yeah, you probably won't know a girl is really a girl until you find out "she's" bone dry. But no one will be there to tell on you and you might find out somethings about yourself along the way.

I see no downsides.
