Surprisingly, I've never been to Atlanta before besides the airport but I'm planning on meeting my dad there for the mets/braves weekend Friday afternoon - Sunday noonish. We already have a hotel near the stadium but are looking for places to eat and things to do on Friday afternoon/evening, Saturday, and Sunday morning. I was thinking of going to the Coke facility and taking a tour on saturday, anyone have an idea as to how long this would take? Other suggestions are appreciated, thanks

Are you talking about the World of Coke? It will take you about 1.5-2 hours I would say.

The aquarium in Atlanta is really nice and I would recommend that. The zoo is pretty solid but you may not want to be doing that in this heat.

Are you a beer fan? Breweries have really exploded in Atlanta lately. If so what kind of beer do you like?

What kind of food do you like / fancy or not? I can shoot some restaurant recommendations your way too based on that.

I guess? I know coke is based in atlanta and has tours so this must be what it is actually called. Two hours seems kind of quick, is there anything else around that area of the city if we decided to do this before the game on Saturday?

I am a big fan of IPAs, however my dad stopped drinking years ago so not sure breweries are a go for this trip.

A nice dinner on Friday would be good. We'll have a rental car so we can get anywhere around the city. We're both flexible on types of food (BBQ, mexican, southern, etc.), think the only two types to exclude are seafood and indian (he went to india last year and hasn't had indian food since )

Those two sound interesting, dad loves college football so that's probably going to happen. Do I get extra MQDs for entrance to the flight museum?

You can do the aquarium and CFB HOF. All really close to each other.

My personal favorite restaurant for a nicer meal in Atlanta is Miller Union.

Boccaluppo is a cool place in Inman Park. Kind of Italian/Asian hybrid.

The best pizza is probably O4W Pizza in Duluth. You can also find some really great Korean BBQ places there.

As far as traditional BBQ I still like Fox Brothers the best but I know other people think it is overrated.

Is Underground still a thing over there?

A city generally best appreciated when viewed from a rear view mirror. Lived there for over 20 years.

Anyhow, I still have family there and it's gotten better in many areas. Ponce City Market is cool for food. You can get one of the City's better burgers there plus some other cool options under one roof.

World of Coke is great but pretty much geared towards kids. Plan on giving the World of Coke at least an hour or two. The sampling station at the end is worth the price of admission.

The Aquarium is cool too and right around the corner.

It was a shithole that had seen better days 8 years ago when I went - maybe someone can comment if it has improved or is still bad?

It's really hit or miss, more dedicated for kids. not really anything much as far as memorabilia, mostly games and digital content. Good time waster, but might be something else more fun. its nothing like MLB or NFL hof.

Ponce City market for lunch might be fun, but it gets crowded.

plan some time before the game to hang out outside of stadium, its really cool.

Lots of food options, so price and cuisine and you will get a lot of recs.

Decatur is cool to walk around and grab a bite. also on the marta line, so easy to get to. if you like counter culture, little five points for an interesting walk and shopping

Underground closed and was sold to a developer. It'll be redeveloped along with some recently announced redevelopment plans for 8 nearby blocks of South downtown and the gulch area between downtown and Phillips arena. Really ambitious plans underway by private firms... Could really inject some much needed energy into that part of the city and not surprising given the transformative gentrification happening all over the in town neighborhoods.

Better than Antico?

Second Bocca Lupa on the meal front .... also enjoy the Optimist, Cooks & Soldiers, Marcel, The Kimball House, Sotto Sotto

I thought World of Coke was pretty lame when I went several years ago. Not really worth the effort, IMO, unless they've improved on it.

Atlanta has a really nice art museum if you're into that sort of thing - the High Museum of Art. There's an Andy Warhol exhibit there this summer.

Jimmy Carter Library is okay if you've never been to a Presedential Library. It's only worth an hour or two of your time though. It's close to that Ponce City Market others have mentioned. Had dinner there on night a couple of months ago, and the options are overwhelming. There's pretty much every style cuisine there to choose from. Craft beer stand there as well.

Yeah, after a while I thought "why the hell did I pay good money to subject myself to an endless Coke commercial?!?". The samples of different flavors from around the world was interesting for a little while but mostly they tasted pretty bad and it got old quick.

This weekend in Kennesaw (not far from where you are staying), they are having the Pig and Peach festival. It's basically a bunch of BBQ and peach desserts.

CFB hall of fame, world of coke (even if its just for an hr or two), atlanta aquarium, braves/mets game and some good food recommendations. Been a little preoccupied with the hurricane harvey air travel to even think about vacation so appreciate the suggestions

Unfortunately I won't be in town until Sept. 15th but that sounds like it'd be delicious.

ah, my bad. i didn't look up the braves schedule and assumed you meant this weekend.

i wouldn't waste my time at the World of Coke. The zoo and aquarium are both really good if you are into that sort of thing.

i'd say that local once-a-year type activities are more fun than your standard touristy stuff. i'd just try and find a calendar that summarizes all the various things going on during that particular weekend.

music midtown is that weekend at Piedmont Park, but I'm not sure that would mesh with a weekend of baseball.

If downtown at coke/aquarium, might as well hit the varsity up the street. Not fine dining, but historical
