The wife talked me into going on Carnival

We went to Cozumel and Progreso. The excursions were ok but nothing special. This ship ( Valor) is kind of shitty. Long lines for food which for the most part is terrible and the people are nasty , not all but most. They let their kids run a muck banging on doors at 2am , foul language, out of control etc We are in our mid 50’s and have a few extra pounds I’m sure but damn they’ve got some heavy weights on here in bikinis that will make you lose your lunch .This feels like a Walmart floating in the Gulf. A vacation shouldn’t make you look forward to going back to work but I truly do. My first cruise and definitely my last

So you were right at home.

Amuck is one word. It’s also not used much anymore. Amok is more common.
Also, buffets are pretty trashy anywhere, so if you’re using those as your primary source of food, it may say something about you. Don’t judge your fellow buffet hogs so harshly.
Finally, I’m a pretty snobby person, and even I have had fun on a carnival cruise before. Yes, it’s the bottom of the barrel so to speak, but you should try to relax a little.

I would't judge an entire industry when only sampling the option which would probably be considered the worst.
I don't think it's a fair sample to judge all family, mass market cruise lines (Disney, Princess, Norwegian, Carnival and Royal Caribbean) based on what is likely the worst option out of one of the ports on an itinerary known for supplying one of the "trashiest" clientele's BUT I wouldn't try to convince anyone who doesnt think they would enjoy another cruise to try it again on a different line.
A Royal Caribbean Cruise to Puerta Vallerta, a Norweigien cruise to Alaska, a Princess Cruise to New England and Canada, A Disney Cruise to the eastern Caribbean and Bahamas are all MUCH different then a Carnival Cruise out of New Orleans to Mexico.
That being said...even on the shittiest Carnival ship our of NOLA to Cozumel, I still had a fun.

I’m as bougie as they come and I love taking vacations on CCL.
Their new ships are amazing and the refurbished ones are nice. I have to stand in line to get food because there’s thousands of people crammed into a 1/4 mi x 100 yd space.
I avoid the buffet whenever I can. Main dining or specialty for lunch and dinner. Main dining for breakfast when offered.
It’s a party crowd and lowest priced of the mainline cruise lines, so that’s the crowd they attract. It’s not for everyone.
If you go again, try one of their newer ships. Also, short routes are cheap. That attracts a corresponding demographic. I rarely go shorter than 7 days.

The key on the shorter cruises would be out of different ports that are not over the weekend.
What I mean is, ships then may do a shorter itinerary may do something like a 4 night sailing, then a 7 night sailing and one of those often falls over a weekend...pick the one that doesnt and don't do it out of the south.
There's a short Royal Caribbean Cruise that goes over a weekend in December that we are probably going to take though that starts and ends in Tampa and disembarkation day is the day the Saints play Tampa so thats our plan.
2-3 days in Sarasota, cruise, watch the Saints play then fly home.

Cruises are pretty entertaining most of the time. The mistake you made was choosing Carnival.

I had a very similar experience to yours back about 8 years ago or so. I hadn't really looked into cruises at all before booking, won't make that mistake again. I don't really get the appeal of a cruise, if I wanted that type of vacation I would just book an all inclusive. Those types of vacations really aren't my thing either though.

Not all cruise lines are created equal. Can’t speak highly enough about the Viking Ocean cruise we just took.

I hate cruises. I never will go back on one. Same experience as you but on a seven day cruise out of Long Beach. People like cruises because it’s a cheap way to travel and they get unlimited food. I don’t go to buffets anyways. I like food in moderation which cancels out most people allure for cruises. My dad loves cruises since he loves to eat. I also found the excursions provided limited time in a port. Why not just pick a destination and enjoy it then next vocation pick a different d3stination and so on

I’ve only been on one cruise. My parents loved them and took us one once because they wanted to share something they loved with us. It was okay, but the limited time in port wasn’t my thing. I like to get out and explore when I’m somewhere new and time was too limited to really do that. The excursions we went on were just okay. I got kind of bored and stir crazy on the boat.
It was a Carnival cruise out of Miami. Forget the name of the ship. This was 20ish years ago.

I am on day 8 of a Carnival cruise right now, actually -- finishing up a 9-night cruise through Norway (departed from and returning to England).
I have almost never waited in line at the buffet, and I've consistently enjoyed the food, especially in the main dining room.
I haven't heard any foul language, or seen any kids running around amok.
This is my first cruise since 2003, and I have enjoyed it. Our ship, the Pride, is 20 years old and shows it in some ways (e.g. there's only one plug in the room), but we have been enjoying it.
I don't know if the difference is the destination, length of cruise, the fact that our boat isn't completely full, or what. But I'm sorry that you had a bad experience. Mine has been different.

If you're eating at the buffet, you are the same person you are criticizing. Look in the mirror, then put on some decent attire and go to a restaurant.
Norwegian, drink package, stay in the haven. No poors and no fatty's, great experience.

I hear you, and definitely some must be better than others. I would assume factors like price, destination, original port, etc. all make a difference in that.
Cruises are just not appealing to me, regardless of it being a higher end one or a Carnival Valor experience. No knock on those who enjoy them, it’s your money and your vacation. I just can’t imagine ever going on a cruise again (haven’t been since college)

Don’t judge everything based on that one experience. It would be like swearing off all restaurants after one trip to Golden Corral
Spend some money on a nice Alaskan cruise and get back to us.

Sounds like you did it wrong. Did you hang out on the balcony when at sea Or were you on deck 1? Room service And drinks were ok? Snorkel in Cozumel? Eat some Guy's burgers?

If you want to go on a mostly adult cruise go on Holland America. Average age is over 45. When we went we saw less than 10 kids on ship.

Drinks cost money on carnival, just stay away. If it's not all inclusive, ignore it.
We docked next to carnival in nassau i think, and these frat guys were yelling at us from the top deck, we told them drinks were free, they didn't understand so we poured our pina colada's over the side(don't do this, they def landed on someones balcony) and yelled back, no problem, we can get more. You could see the disappointment in their faces.
