But I'm hating on all their new policies so much that I chose United (convenient airport) for $50 more to go to Nashville next month. I'll figure out how to not check a bag and use my daughter's (no pics) toiletries when I visit her there.
I can't tell you the last time I checked a bag for a domestic trip. Southwest eliminating free checked bags has almost no impact on how I fly.
Living in Cypress I'd rather fly out of IAH anyway though.

Feels like I've posted too much about SW but at this point unless you have super high status its barely any difference between carriers for domestic flights these days. Did I like all the changes, no, but SW is still convenient and cost competitive for me, and we got another 17 months of companion pass and a bunch of points to use.
That said I've already shifted my behavior, last year I flew 5 different US carriers, since 2022 i've flown everything out of MSY except Breeze and Frontier, and may have a Breeze flight later this year. Thats where I am now.

I fly whoever has the cheapest First Class ticket that works with my schedule. Living in Austin, Southwest comes into the picture as they are the only carrier on multiple direct routes however, my most flown one is AUS-MSY and Delta is running that now.

I'm a heavy packer, have lots of hair and makeup stuff (liquids), and just don't like hauling stuff. Bags is a big thing for me. Carrying on is a pain for me and I'd never manage it for more than 3 nights. I like my stuff.
I do prefer IAH by a lot. But for $100 or more, I'll suffer the drive.

Another Southwest update. Not a huge change and only affects a limited number of people but they've changed their "Customers of Size" policy to align with assigned seating.
No more preboards and the seat next to you needs to be available at booking.

Southwest will only refund additional seats if the following conditions are met:
The flight(s) must depart with at least one open seat (or with Passengers traveling on space available passes).
Both seats should be purchased in the same fare class (i.e., Choice, Choice Preferred, Choice Extra, or Basic).
The refund request must be made within 90 days of your date of travel.
I'm not a fatty but I would like to do this when possible- I would love to buy two seats for more room, and then get a refund for one of the seats. Would I be discriminated against for maintaining a healthy weight?

Unfortunately not.
Not sure how that would be enforced but they don't allow it.

Interesting. I'd like to see the criteria they use to determine if someone is a "customer of size"
What a sad commentary on life these days where this even has to be a thing. People have no self discipline anymore. Let's reward these guys for being slobs while not allowing the same benefit for people who take care of themselves.
Much like the issue I witnessed over the weekend of the black families being allowed to board with a wheelchair customer while the white military guy's wife was not allowed to board with him.
ETA: while researching this criteria I found this:
quote:
The airline defines a Customer of Size as any passenger that "encroaches upon any part of the neighboring seat" with the armrest(s) "considered to be the definitive boundary between seats."
Which also led down a rabbit hole about this shite. Discovered there is a watchdog group to help fat people find "fat friendly" businesses

National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA)

Just booked a flight this morning from Love Field to New Orleans for Mardi Gras weekend. Picked Choice Preferred on the way there & got Row 6. Got Choice Extra which is the most expensive on the way back only & was able to get the front row. $1403.00 total for 2 people. I am A List & the most I have ever paid for 2 people even with Business select was around $800 or $900 total. This is ridiculous & going to be a disaster for SW.
I loved open seating with A list but even with A list all the pre-boarders could easily put you halfway back in the plane.

Do you have a Southwest credit card? There are some that offer Preferred and Extra Legroom seats as card perks.

The only advantage that they have left is that they still offer more direct flights than the others.
Chase sapphire point transfer is still really good. But we flew with them last week and the pre- parsing and family boarding is obnoxious. We have little kids, and we’re behind at least 20 people, some with their youngest kid like 10.
I still like southwest the most, but mostly because it is more straightforward which seems to be diminishing.
I flew Alaskan on the same trip for the first time and thought it was pretty terrible. Was a let down as I had heard good things but I suppose that was years ago.

We had a great experience on Alaska last year. Flew AUS-SAN with our son as a lap infant and couldn't have had a better experience.

Southwest is offering free Wi-FI to Rapid Rewards members next week.
I’ve been getting blown up non stop in my inbox with promos from SW.
Is the free $8 Wi-Fi enough to offset the rest of the clusterfrick you have to deal with
ETA: I will say I prefer SW Wi-Fi to United any day of the week. Of course, thats before starlink is on all United planes here shortly.

I get that it's different for people but Southwest is basically becoming American Airlines.
Can't wait for the Starlink Wi-Fi on United.

Count me in the list of people swearing off southwest unless absolutely necessary
This is so odd to me when I read comments like this. Southwest is adopting policies to become more like the big 3 in the US, and by "swearing them off", you're going to show them by supporting the others who have been doing these things for decades?
As a consumer, I have no loyalty to any airlines anymore. I don't fly enough for status to be a selling point (less than 20 paid segments/year), and very few people are getting outsized value for loyalty today with any of the big 3.
Check these boxes and I'm in:
Direct flight, fits my schedule, and cheapest price.
That gets my butt in a seat for most domestic flights
Posted on 8/6/25 at 5:19 pm to JTBrett
Southwest is usually double the price of everyone else

I swore them off before any of these announcements due to their treatment of their best customers, especially with the boarding chaos that is jetway jesus.
I still have a million RR points in my account and will fly them over the years for personal trips as needed, but for my biz travel, I've been all in on United.
I'm just enjoying seeing SW get raked over the coals.

It’d probably be the gate agent seeing the same name on the PNR in multiple seats.
