Going to the Auburn Texas AM game 9/21 and plan to spend 4-5 days following in Hill Country. I know we are going horseback riding but other than that pretty open. Any other must do's, cool towns, local/insider tips etc...?

Will be traveling with small kids.

Thanks!

Here's a link of sites to visit. Other than these, Luckenback is worth a stop for a beer and check out who might be playing. If your into history, the LBJ Ranch is just outside Johnson City.

What to do in the Texas Hill Country

Be sure to make reservations at any of the popular swimming holes.

Go check out the caverns, maybe take the kids on a high fence safari.

I’ve heard that about Fredericksburg. I looked into going when they were kind of labeling themselves as a Napa Valley for people that didn’t want to go to California, and the reviews were basically yeah, you do have a lot of wine, but it all tastes like hammered dog shite.

Many recs will mention Fredericksburg in the hill country. Stay away as its become a tourist trap and the wine sucks.

I was last there in 2014 and I did't think that at all... has it changed in the last couple of years?

Honestly, I wouldn't spend 4-5 days in the hill country if you are traveling with small kids. Maybe a day or two, hit up the LBJ ranch and Luckenbach. Otherwise, I'd spend the rest of the time in San Antonio. Lots more things to do with the kids, such as the river walk / alamo, sea world, run up to new braunfels for the waterpark, etc.

There's also Brenham which has Blue Bell, but I don't think they do tours on weekends.

It's over run with wine tourists and has been for at least 10 years if not more. I guess if you hit it during low season Nov-Feb its better but its not a place where I like to spend much time. Much rather go down to Leaky/Uvalde on the frio river and drive from Leaky to Vanderpol on 337, lots of switchbacks up and over the hill. At Vanderpol is Lost Maples State Park which can be spectacular if the leaves are turning in the fall. I also like Boerne which is almost a suburb of san antonio now but still a nice town. Ciabolo Creek Brewing is a good spot serving good, locally sourced food. Then Comfort and Kerrville are worth stopping at for a beer/lunch/coffee. If you want hole-in-the-wall middle of nowhere winery or saloon, go to Sisterdale to Sister Creek Winery or the saloon across the street. Thats about all there is to Sisterdale.

to me this is an ideal hill country town, if not the ideal. Keep going west to Hill Country State Natural Area for some pretty excellent scenery and hiking and few crowds. Last spring I went camping and kayaking the Guadalupe near Spring Branch and then went to Bandera after to hike. Made for a great hill country weekend.

Much worse since then. Sidewalks are packed, restaurants packed, expensive hotels/airbnb, etc.. Not worth it.

Gotcha. Yea, we went in summer, stayed at a holiday inn express for like $89 a night, wasn't crowded at all. I think the only time we waited for a table all week was at Altdorf, and that might have been a 10 min wait.

Also made a daily visit to Fredericksburg Pie Company =)
