EF Go Ahead Tours has an itinerary in Switzerland, Germany, Austria (Zurich/Lucerne to Vienna). I know people who have done the tour and loved it. Look at the details at the link below to get a good list of must-do sites.

There are so many beautiful and historic castles, palaces, cathedrals/churches, abbeys in that part of the world.

This really depends on the OP’s age. If he is 25 a tour would likely be miserable. If he is 60+ then absolutely.

And yes there’s plenty of tours for younger people but generally speaking they are older.

Yeah. I'm older but still young and fit enough to do some hiking and more strenuous activities. Most of the bus/train tours like that EF one I linked are designed for the 50s+ crowd to mostly walk and sightsee.

I just listed that tour as some possible sights to see besides the more active things to do in the outdoors for younger people or those that can still hike, etc.

I would say def spend a few days in the jungfrau region. Lauterbrunnen , Grindelwald , wengen , & Murren is a must imo.

I will be in Grindelwald for a few days in June. What do you suggest we do there? We do plan on doing a hike.

35, thanks for the advice! I have it mapped out pretty good now with the advice here, I had initially planned to work up towards Czech republic before Berlin but after suggestions I think I am trading that time for northern Italy. I will work further east next summer

Download the all trails app and look up some good hikes like you have plan. I highly recommend the north face trail over in nearby murren. It was probably my favorite hike ever. Google Grindelwald First. They have a really cool cliff walk. You take a gondola up and can either hike down, Do gliders, or Ride these really cool trikes down. It’s a blast with breathtaking views all the way down. I’d try to choose my day and time wisely as it can get very busy.

Also look into Jungfraujoch (Top of Europe) nearby. It’s a little pricey but worth it.

You likely don't want tours then, most of those tours are 70+ year olds. They serve a purpose, but you are going to want to choke someone due to how ignorant someone on the bus will be and it will feel like a snail's pace. You may need to take one though from a town up to an activity, castle etc.

Northern italy is incredible. Lake Garda is amazing for younger people. Tons of great outdoor activities.

I got lucky and loved my honeymoon itinerary. Started in Munich, went to Saltzburg and did the sound of music tour for my wife, down through the alps to Venice, and then looped back up.

All of the King Ludwig castle's are fantastic.

Check out the alp extreme sports. I can't recommend Canyoning enough.

This looks right up my alley! Did something similar underground in New Zealand and it was one of the highlights. I use Viator a good bit and have had luck other places avoiding the busses so hope that holds true for this one

Looking into a trip like this for myself as well... targeting early September. Any recs for Munich? I'm also a big train enthusiast and am considering either an overnight or daytime train from Amsterdam down the Rhine valley.

We took a tour with Eagles Nest Historical Tours this past Saturday. We had the private 4 hour history buff tour and it was fantastic. I just thought I knew WW II history! I recommend it highly. And the area is beautiful as well.
PS Don’t do it on your own

Make sure you hit Munich before Octoberfest starts which is typically mid-September, despite the name.

Overnight trains are overrated in my opinion. People romanticize them but it will be cramped and the worst sleep you ever get. Then when you get to your destination you are tired, cranky, dirty and you can't check into your hotel for another seven hours.

If you want a train experience, ride one of the big tourist trains in Switzerland - Glacier Express, Golden Pass or Bernina Express.

You can stay in Koblenz and use that as a base to ride the regional trains down the Rhine Valley and Mosel Valley. Lots of castles and little medieval towns where you can hop off and explore.
