Companion Pass harder to earn, and linked to spend. Where art thou LUV sychophants?

quote:

The budget airline will swap its A-List and A-List Preferred levels with Silver and Gold, and add a new Platinum tier. This means, Silver will now replace A-List while Gold will replace A-List Preferred.

The new Platinum will include the unlimited Companion Pass trips — but the way to score the pass will require passengers to spend more. Previously, travelers could earn the coveted Companion Pass by earning 135,000 eligible points in one calendar year — this included qualifying credit card welcome bonuses.

Once the change comes into force, bonuses will no longer count toward requirements. Instead, the airline said purchases made with Southwest Rapid Rewards credit cards will earn one Tier Qualifying Points (TQP) for every dollar spent.

quote:

“RIP to the best deal in travel: Southwest is effectively gutting the Companion Pass – or the best way to earn it, anyway,” the post read. “Starting Jan. 1, welcome bonuses on new credit cards no longer count toward earning unlimited BOGO flights. You’ll have to fly Southwest, spend ($140K!) on a Southwest card a year, or some combination of the two.”

These don’t exist anymore. Just an absolutely pitiful airline now. What a fall from grace

SWA gutted the companion pass a long time ago. In the good ole days it was based on the number of segments only.

After being a fairly consistent SWA flyer for years, I go out of my way to avoid them now. They offer a budget experience at non budget prices. Only thing they have going for them is more flexible direct routing in some instances.

It went downhill when they bought AirTran. I was working there for about a year at the time, and you could watch the "budget" fare window shrink to basically the first and last flights of the day.

Combine that with the second class experience at HOU and DAL, it was never worth it.

Almost posted this last week but felt I've bashed SW enough over the past few years....

They aren't anything what they once were. Just a dime a dozen airline at this point. Funny they are going to the Silver, gold, platinum levels like everyone else. Nothing unique about them anymore.

I still have nearly 1 million RR points with them. Taking my first flight in nearly a year late November, so will see how the experience is.

It’s *fine* but they are just another bad airline now.

They have zero differentiation from anyone else and fly less places than the real big boys. There’s literally zero reason to choose them. Not cheap, not direct, not good customer service, etc.

Airline loyalty has been all but pointless for a while now

100%. Think i picked the right time to slow down work travel, as its more and more difficult to get top status.

United's 1k which I've had for years is up to 26k spend or like 60 flights and 22k spend. Only doing about 30 flights a year right now.

I'm waiting to see what the new ways to use RR points is. Need to figure out how to burn a few hundred thousand

It's funny because their biggest base of work travel loyalists are either the ones still defending them still fooled the boarding process improvements had anything to do with a smoother boarding experience and not just another revenue generator or the ones who call them out the most for their fall from grace.

On some routes from MSY, they are still a better option. On others not so much and while I was never sworn to them 100% of the time, they were usually the airline I chose most frequently.

Moved to Delta ALOT the last few years but in my experience, their fall from grace has been more dramatic. SW has actually made a good amount of improvements but they've done it at such a higher cost I often don't think it's been worth it.

Delta has gone downhill domestically but have also raised costs while the same time has experienced a noticeable increase in flight cancellations and operational disruptions, dropped from 1st place in U.S. carrier reliability to 6th in 2026—a position it held for five consecutive years, displayed a lost, damaged or delayed baggage increased by > 25.0% compared to 5 -10 years ago, severe overcrowding in the Sky Lounges and out of date wi-fi compared to other carriers like United.

SW is still presenting as a value airline making improvements but doing so at a higher cost.

Delta is still marketing a premium domestic experience at a higher cost but doing so at a much lower level.

In short, work travelers loved loyalty so they could build up status and take advantage of perks at the expense of their employer. The industry has shifted more into spending on credit cards for travel perks but the biggest shift for SW and the greater impact falls on families who used things like the group boarding process, open seating and free checked bags to save hundreds of dollars on their airline travel.

They've basically become a normal airline without the chances of upgrading to first class. I didn't like Southwest ten years ago, probably wouldn't like it now (other than preferring their seat assignment thing).

For 9 out 10, probably more like 9.8 of 10 travelers this should be how they choose flights. SW deserves criticism, but lets not act like United, Delta, American haven't changed their reward programs to make it harder to gain, keep, use status benefits. Living in NO, SW still has the most direct flight options, and we will have CP through next year, but if I we moved to Atlanta or North side of Houston, or Charlotte, I would fly more from Detla/United/American, whatever airline has the better flight options.

Adding, the airline status hack days are largely done. You want status for any airline you have to fly a ton, fly less but book expensive fares, or spend a ton of money on their CC. It all costs these days.

The only time I ever took advantage of companion pass is when they have done one of those "Buy two one way tickets before ____ and get companion pass until ______"

I flew to houston, went to top golf, had lunch and flew home and have used the pass on three flights already and have three more planned between now and the expiration date.

It's time people became more flexible and less "loyal" to take advantage of the perks that are currently being offered.

With three kids now, I will go with whoever can get me to my destination the fastest with the fewest stops. I will pay extra for it and rarely do I end up pay excessive amounts more.

I'll use the airline cards for free checked bags since the cost of flights on points now are barely worth a sign on bonus. Then just choose whichever airline works best for my destination.

It costs $350-400 per person from MCY to MCO no matter what time of year, it's absurd. Gone are the days of 20k points to MCO or DAL/DFW and good luck finding non-Frontier sub $200 flights to most places.

SW promotional companion passes have treated me well and they have good options from MSY. My guess is they will have promo companion pass options as they lose business with all the changes lately.

We often fly into TPA and save alot. Car rentals are usually cheaper than MCO as well. The drive takes about an hour but it's over 30 from MCO to WDW anyway but in man instances that 30 minutes can save over $1,000 for a family of 4.

That's going away as well.

I left Delta after they gutted their SkyMiles program and SW offered more direct options for my business travel from MSY. Kept the SW Cards after I stopped traveling for work but looks like we're going to switch to a traditional travel rewards card now.

SWA went from the airline that I would check first for prices… to the one I wouldn’t even consider flying at all

The other dumb thing is my 2026 numbers would have me at their new Platinum tier. But I'm being demoted to Gold.

I don't think anyone will be Platinum until around the middle of 2027. I also would have qualified for Platinum based on spending this year, but I still get free companion until 12/31/2027. I will probably qualify for Platinum by the middle of 2027. I still fly Southwest because of the routes (I fly Dallas to MSY at least once a month in non-football months and 2 - 3 times a month during football season). Mostly always on time and short flight. My wife can tag along anytime that she wants for free. The new calculation of TQP (from partial points to full dollar per TQP) will make Platinum easy to qualify for big credit card spenders. I am waiting for them to open Europe routes in the next few years, so I will keep flying them.

Why for the love of god would you go on a 737 3/3 config for over 6 hours?

Thats insanity.

A little more pts wise, but you can book through RR portal for other carriers. Get on a 777/787 via United/Delta and be comfortable.
