Want to go and gorge myself on pastries, coffee, Chinese food, seafood, maybe Italian. Never been, live close, planning to go for my birthday. Give me all the places.

If there’s a show at great American music hall, do that. The haight is a lot of fun if that’s your thing. Giants game, Golden Gate Park, botanical garden, the presidio, ocean beach & great highway, fisherman’s warf, etc etc

SF is one of my favorite cities and three is so much to do there I wont even try to name the all as many were mentioned above. It is a wonderful city that has issues like all cities but I never had anything other than a great time when I am there. I usually stay in the Russian Hill/ Embarcadero area but there are many neighborhoods to enjoy.

Rent a bike and cycle across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito, and then ride the ferry back (with your bike). Stop mid-way over the bridge and look around. It's an incredible way to see the city, the bay, and a unique little town on the north side with quaint bars/restaurants on the water. Depending on how long you want to linger in Sausalito, this could be anywhere from a 4 - 8 hour activity. It is 100% worth it.
I also love R&G Lounge in Chinatown. Pop in LiPo Lounge for a Mai Tai (it's an experience).
If you like Irish Coffee, go to The Buena Vista. They are world famous for them.
I typically stay in the Marriott Marquis and there's an unbelievable bar on the 48th (maybe?) floor there with panoramic views of the city and bay. Really cool to grab a drink about an hour before sunset. It'll get crowded so I usually go earlier. Another similar rooftop view spot is Top of the Mark. Also very renowned.
We also love Swan Oyster Depot in Nob Hill. Waterbar near the Ferry Building is top notch for dinner and bay / bridge views. If you're looking for ocean views go out to the west side to java Beach Cafe in Ocean Beach.

Golden Gate Park is very big and mostly locals or tourists with ties to the city. Take N-Juhda street car to 9th & Irving, great variety of food places. Pastry include Tartines (with tables) and Arismendies (carryout only).Shop Green Apple Books, all within 2 blocks on 9th. Walk 9th into park. Botanic Garden, Cal Academy Science (a nh museum/aquarium) and DeYoung Museum (art) are close together.
Other N car stops worth exploring are DeBois Park, Cole Street (3 blocks off Haight), Ocean Side (end of line). Get off around 19th and walk one block to Irving for a tourist-free Chinatown Experience along Irving in both directions.

I'm actually heading there Sunday and staying at that hotel. Only in the city for 1 day, then heading North. Our plan:
Fly in to SFO, drive to hotel.
Drive to alamo square park go see painted ladies (Full house houses).
Drive to park outside of lombard street. Walk the curvy road.
Head on over to fisherman's wharf. Ride the blue and gold fleet tour that circumnavigates alcatraz in the bay.
Get back, eat at Fog Harbor. Not 100% set here yet, open to recommendations.
Head back to hotel, go to top of the mark, then head out the next day to Russian River brewery then on to Napa.

Excellent advice. A day on the N train can easily cover the good stuff at Golden Gate Park, the haight and the beach. Completely unique experience among American cities

If you miss something and you're staying in napa for a while, you can get to the ferry in oakland in 20 minutes and go back without worrying about parking.
