Thinking about taking the wife out west this year. Plan is to fly NOLA to Salt Lake City in October then head north. Would like to hit Jackson Hole, Grand Teton, Yellowstone, and then Glacier before flying out of Kalispell. Looking to keep this trip to 7 or 8 days if possible but would really like to spend a few days in Glacier hiking. So I may need to plan for 9-10. Anyone have any suggestions on cool things to do along the way? Things to avoid? Any travel issues in Glacier during late October? Best places to stay?

Going in late October, I’d switch to mid September. Late October in the mtns is basically winter most years.

The week after Labor Day is normally nice. Less crowds and good weather. October would be not my ideal time for a trip where you want to see as much as possible.

I'd also advise to leave earlier. I look forward to a nice trip report when you get back, though as this is something I'd love to do as well.

Made the trip from Jackson Hole to Salt Lake City in early September. Great time of year there. Idaho has some beautiful areas along the route. Soda Springs Idaho has a hot springs geyser.

Definitely agree with going earlier than late October. I have been everywhere you mentioned (but not in one trip) and think you will have a great time.

It’s a great area. Salt Lake to Glacier will be a highlight reel of sights to see. It’s all beautiful.

Grand Teton, Yellowstone

should send the rest of your time seeing these but if you must make it to glacier you can do GT overview in a day. You should drive out of the east entrance and up to North Breccia Cliffs. Will take about two hours round trip but the cliffs are rad and the views back into the park are spectacular. Even better at sunrise.

Yellowstone takes a few days to half's it even. Both east entrances are must sees imo so you need to drive to them. Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Old Faithful, Grand Prismatic, Mammoth area....I have been for a week twice and haven't seen everything. The ride over Bear Tooth Pass into Montana is worth it if it is still open.

The drive to Kalispell out of Yellowstone is a solid day. If you have time take 83 up north of Missoula, its gorgeous. Belton Chalet in West Glacier has cheap good beer, banging cocktails and fricking amazing food. We ate there 3 times in like 5 days. They cook everything on wood.

If you can stay in the park everywhere it will save you a ton of driving and time. We always camp in the parks and I couldn't imagine getting up each day and driving 30 minutes to sit in line at the entrances.

Definitely do 10 days. Went with the fam just to Yellowstone and Jackson and with losing 2 days to travel it was too short. We got it all in but it was a grind at times. You won’t regret staying longer.

If no kids then go after Labor Day, the crowds should be much better. Although the summer weather is awesome

I’d recommend stopping or driving by bear lake on the way up to Jackson from SLC. The drive isn’t that much longer and the views are much better.

Here to grand canyon, there to Moab, moab to west Yellowstone, then back.

It's looking fricking cold
