Nothing fancy. Looking for places with good food. Trattorias, pizza, etc.

In Rome we will be staying around the Campo do Fiori / Piazza Navona.

Trattoria Sostanza in Florence. Get the butter chicken. Butter, garlic and chicken coooked over a wood fire. It's amazing.

ETA: Lunch only and you'll need a reservation. It's a small hole in the wall place.

Get a sandwich at the famous sandwich place in Florence (everyone will know what you mean), its the size of a manhole for like 5 euro and its delicious.

Also, find a place serving a florentinian steak and go get it. We went to restaurant with a stone wine cellar from the 1500's and ate down there. it was really cool.

Also, if you see Pici pasta (Really Thick Spaghetti, almost Udon-like) with truffle oil sausage cream sauce, GET IT. We ate that dish at 2 different restaurants. incredible at both and we made it when we got home.

We did a Trastevere food tour one evening in Rome after all of historical tours for a change of pace. It was amazing!

Signorvino Firenze

We took a day trip to Florence to see some family and they knew all of the non-tourists spots. This was a place we stopped and had beer and wine with a really cool view.

If you make your way toward the Forum/Colosseum, there's a fantastic pizza place called Trieste on Via Urbana. Was in Italy two weeks over the summer and flew in/out of Rome and ended up eating there twice as we stayed close to the Roma Termini.

They do smaller, "personal" sized pies. The (I'm assuming) owner can spot an American walking in the door. He'll ask where you're from and that's what he yells out when your food is ready.

Vini e vecchi sapori in florence is one of the better meals I have ever had. Tiny place, get your hotel to do it.

4 Leoni is also very good (Quatro Leoni)

In florence you want bistecca, anything else is a waste of time.

And for the love of god, do not say a word about how you want it prepared.

There is only one way, and they don't ask

Eat pizza once. Italy has so many great things to eat beyond pizza and lasagna.

Near the Campo de Fiori there is Osteria da Fortunata.

There are actually 2 locations across the street from each other- demand is that high. You can watch the old ladies make pasta in the window. Best carbonara in Rome hands down.

We had about a 20 minute wait for a table for 2 on a random weekday afternoon

There is a place on via dei Neri nearly next door to where we stayed called L’osteria. I think the address is 12 via dei Neri. Ask for Desiree. One of the best florentine steaks we had if not the best and she was fun and friendly. I think we ate there 3-4x. Owner or management was gracious and friendly too. Of course maybe it’s due to the many bottles and many plates we ordered. Also one of the best gelato places is across the street at gelato dei Neri and antico vinnao or whatever it is just a little ways down on the same street. I never stood in the long line bc there are less social media famous ones that are equally as good or better. We spent several meals at bar di riviore. Pretty good people watching from there on the palazzo vecchio. In the summer when I took my teen there were orchestras performing on the old stage nearby the Perseus statue. That was amazing and I didn’t get to see that when husband and I returned in April. Another hotspot we repeatedly visited was someplace called patskowsky’s or something like that. Great service and comfortable place for drinks and bands usually played after 11.

As others will say, there are tons of great places. Here are two:

Rome: Poldo e Gianna Osteria (Giolitti is also nearby for gelato)

Florence: Buca Lapi

Both need reservations. I had to send Buca Lapi an email precisely one month ahead of time.

For a fun inexpensive meal, I love grabbing a lampredotto (or really anything they offer) at Da Nerbone in the farmer's market near the train station. It'e easier to eat if you get it "to go" and grab a seat upstairs.

If you're going to have any travel in the countryside around Florence, I have lots of recommendations. In my opinion, the most amazing food is available in the smaller towns.

Yes please. Have a decent roster for in cities but will be spending 4 days bumming around Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna next summer.

Two places near your hotel in Rome.

Hosteria Costanza
Just off Campo de Fiori
Good food and the restaurant is built among the ruins of the old Theatre de Pompeo which is where Julius Caesar was assassinated.

Enoteca Cul de Sac

Wine bar just off Piazza Navona. Good food and a serious Italian wine list

In Florence.
Ristorante Saint Ambrogio near the Square of the same name and Ristorante Natalino are two of favorites.
Cacio vino Trallalla is another little wine bar with very good food that we found because it was on the alley behind our hotel. Near the duomo.
