Road to Hana - Maui

Just got back, did this on our last day. Anyone here done this? What an incredible experience. Tiny two lane road, one lane bridges, cliffs a thousand+ feet over the Pacific, waterfalls, 600 hairpin turns for about 40 miles. Absolsultely gorgeous, looked like Jurrasic Park.
If you are ever in Maui, make sure you do this drive. You won't regret it.
ETA - Move to travel board, I forgot we had one.

Did you go all the way around? Or did you turn around in Hana and come back?

We tried, heavy rains had the entire island without power for hours the day before (I don't need reminders of Hurricane Irma), we decided to turn back because it was getting dark. The "highway" was still amazing. I know the backside is truly intense, but what we drove was awesome.
We biked down the volcano after sunset, snorckled amazing reefs. It was truly a great vacation, especially since I don't take any! And it was free,

If you ever get to do it again, try to go all the way. It’s truly amazing the difference in the environments. One minute everything is lush and green and temperatures are mild and comfortable. Then the next minute it’s like a barren wasteland with soaring temperatures and zero vegetation. It’s strange that the two worlds can coexist so close together.

We are planning a trip to Maui next year, and I've heard that the Road to Hana is a must, so it is definitely in the plans. Couple of questions if you don't mind:
1) What is the "other side of the loop" of the Hana Road like, I thought it was pretty much drive to Hana, turn around and drive back. I know you didn't do it, but from what you've heard, is it worth doing it?
2)What are other must do items in Maui besides the National Park?
Thanks

I have and it was the entire trip around, incredible and highly recommend to anyone visiting Maui.

So, we took the "highway", which sounds safe, but is still 15mph and playing ckicken *bows* to oncoming cars. It isn't easy. The "backside" is one lane dirt roads, bumpy and slightly trecherous. We weren't interested. The road we took there and back was breathtaking. Fastr on the way home, bc you feel comfy and can stop at waterfalls. Lots of potential hiking and stops. You will love it. The backside is a local road, very beat up, dirt at some points.
Must do - Snorkel the coral reefs. Swim in 20' waves and hope the riptides don't drown you See the volcano. Just take it all in. The foilage was similar to here where I live, so the guys returning to Chicago and the NE had a way worse trip back. We have now been up 30 hours. My internal clock never got straight. Up at 4 every moring, tired by 9pm.

We did. Went clockwise. Ended up watching a sun set overlooking the bay, with the crest of that volcano just breaching the water.

Going to Maui for Thanksgiving and doing this for the first time. Really looking forward to it

I appreciate the advice! I'm thinking we'll probably do the same as you and stick to the lush eastern side of the "highway", turn around in Hana and head back. We'll probably do some snorkeling and swimming too, really looking forward to this trip!

Stood it as long as I could but got car sick and we had to turn back...3 of us got sick....and I don’t get car sick but those turns give a whole new appreciation for hair pin....what I did see before puking my guts out was unbelievably gorgeous

:raises hand:
How you not post the weird rainbow trees all along the road.

Probably because it was filmed there. I went on a Helicopter tour as a kid over there, and they flew us between those iconic cliffs. Puked in the lap of my Dad's best customer.

Drove the Oahu perimeter a few years ago. It was cool but nothing nearly as dramatic as you're describing. Seriously considering a return trip to Maui or Hilo.

I love me some Hawai’i.

What area of the island did you stay on?
Where did you eat and drink?

1 - sunrise at volcano / bike down. So awesome! (Haleakala crater, or something like that)
2 - We stayed two nights in hana. There's a park you can hike in with the seven pools or something. Really cool. And if you hike up at that same place, there is a cool waterfall and a bamboo forest.
3 - luau (we did the Old lahaina luau and it rocked)
4 - in Lahaina, there are two must sees. One is the Banyan tree. It's one tree that takes up a whole city block. Amazing. Also there is a liquor store that has like 15 types of ahi poke and it's Sooooo good.
I am probably butchering all these names, but they aren't too far off.

I survived my dad's awful driving on that road.

I went all the way around last April. It was really cool and not nearly as scary as they make it out. I drove in northern Italy and those roads are way worse.

I appreciate it, I am definitely taking notes on all the advice! Planning for around April, going with another couple, SIL and BIL. They've been once, but stayed on the big island. Lots of planning head!
