Hearst Castle, Carmel, Big Sur. Solvang was a quaint Dutch village when I first went there in the 1980's. Now it is very touristy, like Gatlinburg west, but if you don't mind that it is worth a stop.

It is worth the trip just to view the scenery. I have done all or part of it several times and hope to do it again when LSU plays UCLA this coming season.

The Hearst Castle is a must. We took the general tour and it was amazing. There is another tour that cost a little more that goes into the kitchen and living qtrs. We will do that one next time we go there and we will.

Feed the squirrels walnuts at the Bixby Bridge. Be careful, protect yourself at all times.

If you or passengers are prone to motion sickness at all, pack Dramamine. Beautiful, but isolated so you need to plan your bathroom breaks and food stops, or pack your own picnics. I love Point Sur, and there are tours of the lighthouse there (dunno during Covid). The Big Sur River Inn has a restaurant—food is fine, but the real attraction is sitting outside under the trees, listening to the Big Sur river rush by over the rocks if it’s rained recently.

Watching the sunset at Asilomar Beach in Pacific Grove is a treat—great tide pools there, too. PG has some nice AirBnB listings, and the town is less touristy and more quaint than Monterey, IMHO.

Cambria is a nice place to stay. Lots of B&B type places. Hearst Castle is worth your time. Even if you think you don't like that kind of thing, trust me it is worth it. Santa Barbara is worth some time too. Lot of wineries in the area.

Sorry to be a downer, but why would you plan a trip to California in 2 months?

We are under tight restrictions statewide. I’d be surprised if Hearst castle is even open.

I stayed in Morro Bay halfway up the coast. It was great. Hug the coast the whole way up(or down)

Friend,

We had a marvelous trip to Monterey, really, Carmel, which is one of America's great towns. It is worth a meal and at least a morning or afternoon of browsing. If you like golf, Pebble Beach is likely available and worth it if you have the time, but if time is pressed, I would not sacrifice Carmel for Pebble Beach. Here are some links that may be of help to you:

TulaneLSU's Top 10 observations and tips for playing a round at Pebble Beach

If you're feeling adventurous and want to get away from the coast, you could go get some of the world's best enchiladas in Merced. For more, see TulaneLSU's Top 10 signs of Merced

Yours,
TulaneLSU

I did Malibu-Monterey-Malibu on a motorcycle in 2018. Loved Monterey and stunning views everywhere. Morro Bay is a cool spot and the Nepenthe Restaurant in Big Sur is beautiful. Plenty of places to pull of the road for photos.
