Other U.S. towns that are sort of like Key West?

My favorite town in the US is Key West. But I also realize that I'm not that well traveled when it comes to coastal towns.

I like the bar hop, laid back, smallish town, with coastal fishing/water sports aspects of KW, but of course I wonder if the massive tourist population would get tiresome if one lived there.

Are there other towns that have a similar vibe? I'd like to go check them out. Might even want to retire to one someday.

We went to Key West this past February and it's the only place we have visited where I thought I might like to move to. But I might not like it in August and it is costly.

I don't know of anything quite like KW but some places you might want to check out:
- St. Simons Island/ Jekyll Island, GA
- Beaufort, SC
- Beaufort/Morehead City, NC
- Duck, NC
- Manteo, NC
- Cape May, NJ - I'm sure it is cold in the winter.

A sleeper might be St. Marys, GA - there was a paper mill there but it closed which affected the economy. On my one visit there several years ago it did not seem to have recovered but it appears to have potential.

Thanks for the feedback.

I've been to KW in May, June, and August. May is pretty warm, June is hot, and August was worse than BR that year. Ideally, a summer home elsewhere would exist.

I'm going to check out everyone's suggestions.

Bay St Louis has lots of gays, if that’s what you’re into.

Apalachicola deserves a mention. And Cedar Key. And Carabelle has always looked like a nice place to live. I live on the coast in that stretch and like life here. But you can keep the tourists. My little town is MUCH smaller than anything listed. I like life quiet and uncrowded.

I was honestly thinking along this line when I first read the OP. I don't mind visiting for a day, but never thought I could stand living there.

Doesn't have the feel of Key West AT ALL.

I like both places, but they are about as different as two places could be except for both being resorty coastal island communities.

I've been wanting to go to Cedar Key, FL. It seems like kind of a smaller rather hidden version of Key West.

Key West is a very unique place and I don't think there is really anything like it anywhere in the US.

Besides the places already mentioned, I would maybe suggest Folly Beach, SC (Charleston metro). It seems to be the funky beach town of that area. Great watersports and fishing around the area, and access to higher end/fancier places in town.

Apalachicola, FL is a mini version in the panhandle.

St. Augustine is a good suggestion. Flagler Beach and New Smyrna Beach further down the Atlantic coast are smaller, laid back communities with fewer tourists.

OP listed as points of interest:

Plenty of places to eat and drink, definitely laid back, you can ride a bicycle across the whole of the island, plenty of fishing (both inland/marsh fishing and access to open ocean fishing) and of the many times I've been to HHI it's hardly a massive tourist draw (even during peak seasons).

Seems like HHI meets OP's ask. Sorry if that hurt your feelings, frickstick.

As I'm looking at those SC and NC (and the GA) towns on a map, I'm asking myself what are the differences in those towns and say, Key West?

Laws, cultures, size, weather? How do they compare, in general?

Do the inland waters stay salty enough to support salt water fishing?

And why is that?

On a whole? Yes. Results may vary by location though.
