Options for next summer

The wife and I are looking at options for the family besides the beach. We love it but with 15 & 13 yr old daughters we think we can do more to expose them to stuff. What are some cool things to do in the states.
We have considered:
Colorado
Boston
Oregon
Yellowstone
Yosimati
Chicago
New York
Anyone have thoughts?

While I now prefer US national parks/ beautiful natural scenery when vacationing stateside, as a 13-15 year old girl, I preferred New York. There is so much to do and definitely a lot of 'stuff to expose them to'. Or, even better, combine scenery and cities and do a California coast trip.

Seattle and then a day trip through Canada

NYC is hot as hell in the summer. We went in July this year -- hot hot hot. But we still enjoyed it. Took my 15 yo dtr and had a blast honestly. She even took dance classes at a dance studio while there. $20 for 90 minutes and she was in Heaven.
Boston is awesome -- we went in September one year and it was amazing.
I'd love to go to Oregon or Yellowstone. Or Yosemite.

How long are you willing to go for?
New York would be my #1 choice, by far. If you have 8 days or less do New York only. If you are willing to stretch to 9 or 10 days you can add Boston, it's a short flight or 4 hour Amtrak trip from NYC. Boston is a great city but I'd be hesitant to take days away from New York to go there unless you have a lot of time.

You seem to have two different types of choices.
Boston/New York/Chicago are all big cities. Of those 3, I would go to New York - and you could hit Boston during that trip because of it's close proximity.
The other options are Colorado, Oregon, Yosemite, and Yellowstone. Those seem to be more outdoor options, involving natural attractions and possibly camping?
I think you should ask yourself which type of trip you want to take, and what your kids would like to see. Colorado and Oregon can combine nature with the cities of Portland and Denver (or Seattle - 2 1/2 hours north of Portland). Yosemite could include San Francisco.
All are good options.

What do your kids enjoy? If outdoorsy, I'd go with Yellowstone. Gardiner is a nice town to stay in at the north gate. Fly into Bozeman. Or you can fly into Jackson hole and work your way north.
Another two outdoorsy options are Mackinac Island, and Isle Royals in Michigan.
To be honest, when I was that age, I hated outdoorsy crap. My dad would always take us to Colorado, and I would make my parents life a living hell because I hated it. Now I'm the exact opposite. I would have much rathered NYC, Boston, etc.
DC would be another great option if they haven't already experienced it.

But now, you're glad he took you there, right? I took my oldest son to Alaska about 10 years ago, and all he wanted to do was stay inside and play video games. I wouldn't let him. I would drag him all over the country side - hiking, fishing, sightseeing, etc... He was very reluctant to go. Now he looks back on that trip as one of his most cherished memories.
You are creating memories, not doing what your kids want to do. They may not think they want to go, but they will thank you later.

Jackson Hole is a fantastic upscale outdoorsy place. Tons to do outdoors but you can do it staying in $10 million dollar houses.
Seattle is a great option. Add in Portland and there's a ton of outdoor stuff there too like whale watching and crabbing that are unique to the area.
I agree with the idea of 'pushing' them but I'm not sure id force a vacation somewhere they were really opposed.
I'm sure they'd love NYC.
Of course all three of those are expensive options.

a trip to new york city can be just as memorable, if not more so, than going to do something outdoorsy. and I 100% appreciate and love nature and outdoor type vacations. I'm not sure what staying indoors to play video games has to do with a trip to nyc.
you can go hunting and fishing anywhere..... there is only one new york city.
plus if the kids will find it more interesting its a win/win

I agree. I'm just saying that the OP should make the decision, and not the kids. Even if they go to NYC, the OP and his SO should make the agenda. The kids may not care about visiting the World Trade Center or the MET, but they will appreciate it later.

I agree with this to a point, but as a parent you also want to have a fun and memorable vacation for yourselves. While your kids may appreciate camping in Yellowstone later, as a dad I don't want to do it if my daughters are going to be griping and miserable the whole time. The last thing I want to do is listen to my kids complaining the whole time.

True, but in my experience, they are only miserable before the trip. If you do fun stuff on the trip, they will have a good time. The kids may want to go to NYC, if only because they would get wifi and a signal on their phone. When I took my kids to NYC, I made them put away their phones, except for the time that we were driving.

Glacier National Park. Fly into Calgary and drive down.

Next August is the total eclipse of the sun. Directly over the Tetons. Already book up. Still look at the path and decide. LINK
