The Museum of Natural History is a really good spot (it's huuuge and there's a Shake Shack behind it on the corner of W 77th and Columbus).
While I do enjoy Shake Shack, there are a ton of good restaurants just a block over on Amsterdam. I live two blocks from the Natural History Museum, so this is my hood.
Pizza Siranetta, Jacobs Pickle, Maison Pickle, Mermaid Inn, Barney Geeengrass, Orwashers, Zabars, etc.

St. John The Divine Cathedral is a great place to check out. You don't have to be religious at all to appreciate its beauty.

Shake Shack, are they really good?
It's good and it's become a bit iconic.

We rented city bicycles to ride across the Brooklyn Bridge and that was a huge mistake. Way too crowded and people walking will not get out of the way and just give you a go to hell look if you ask them to move.
When the wife and I walked it we saw people trying to bike across it and felt sorry for them.

I always enjoy just a slow walk through central park. Except for that one time I saw a rat that was ~ 15lbs. That freaked me out.
The rats in the subway area are scary as frick and huge.
I swear I saw one smoking a cigarette while I was waiting for a train. He flipped me off when I stared at him. a-hole.

If you’ve never been in other cities, eataly is really cool

If you are down by Battery Park or 9/11 Memorial, take a pic with the Stock Market Bull.
Didn't see that mentioned.

Rockefeller Center/NBC tour.
Freedom Tower/911 memorial (I hear the museum is very intetesting but can be emotionally overwhelming).
Take the subway, then walk across the Brooklyn Bridge toward Manhattan. Amazing photo ops.
Circle Line boat tour was a favorite of mine. You get to see a lot of cool things in a short period of time - great views of the city.
Times Square, of course.
See a show.
Guided Central Park tour in one of those bike/carriage things.
Lobster roll from Luke's Lobster.
Katz Deli is iconic with great food.
See the fire station they used to film Ghostbusters. Still active and they sell cool T-shirts there.
Get a chicken and rice plate with extra white sauce from a Halal Guys street cart after you've had a few drinks...ultimate cure for the impending hangover.
Bagel w/lox from Esso Bagel.
Search internet for any movies/TV shows being filmed on location...always interesting to see.
ETA: Grand Central Station! Really cool to see in person, and lots of eating/shopping options inside as well.

Museum of Modern Art is pretty sweet.
As someone else mentioned, 9/11 memorial is a must.
And one I know no one has mentioned- Brindle Room has one of the best burgers in NYC. I stand by this. I’ve heard numerous people, from NYC and elsewhere, say as much.
It’s very small, so if you can swing a weekday it won’t be as busy.

I'm chilling at the boat house in central park right now. Might go to the Guggenheim. Might just find a rooftop bar and drink for a while.

Yankee Stadium or catch a Mets game, anything at the Garden (especially concerts), see the Bull and little girl in front of him on Wall Street, check out St. Patrick’s Catherdral, visit World Trade Center site, check out Times Square after midnight and walk a few blocks from WTC site to see the Statue of Liberty. Can easily be done in two days. Couple of pizza slices or Nobu and head out.
If you have an afternoon to waste Central Park and the Met are both experiences that you will never forget.

Anyone been to Buvette, a few blocks North of Houston? Thinking of going there tonight

I'd recommend a trip to the travel board.
