Maui - Hawaii

Trip to Maui with my wife in Mid-September.
-We will get there at lunch on a Sunday and leave at 9 PM on Friday.
-We are staying in the Ka'anapali area and will have a rental car.
-We would like to snorkel, drive the road to hana, go to a luau and visit Haleakala National Park.
I realize we don't have the longest amount of time there and will need to be strategic to get all of this in. Those with experience, what would you suggest to get all of this done in the time we are there?
--Recommended snorkel packages?
--Road to Hana highlights / must stops?
--Recommended Luau?
--Highlights for Haleakala?
--Restaurants - lunch spots - food trucks?

Snorkel Molokini and with the sea turtles, just google, they have several different companies that do it
Road to Hana - has a place you can stop and eat off the beaten path with traditional hawaiian food and they also have a winery (Maui Wine) that is cool experience - we did a tour that brought us to those spots - if you drive it yourself just google it before you go
they have luaus along all those strips of hotels on Ka'anapali, we did one right on the water - can't remember the name
Book a meal at Mama's Fish House - make reservations now
Lahaina had some decent places but they are still coming back from the fire
You can walk along a path along all those hotels and they have restaurants along the water - kind of pricey but convenient

Drive up to Napili Bay and they have amazing snorkeling right off the beach. Also an amazing restaurant/bar called Sea House
Also highly recommend the following for food

Give these guys a call for the snorkeling. The owner is a very nice guy who has a LSU/Louisiana connection. Ran his charter boat all the way to Louisiana to be painted last year.

Visit Haleakala on your 1st morning there. You will be up super early. It will be near freezing up there so dress accordingly.
You can snorkel at Blackrock if you want to do it on your own.
Black sand beach near Hana - have to book reservations ahead of time. Aunt Sandy’s has fresh banana bread on the road to Hana. Heard there are better places but we liked it.
Leoda’s has really good banana cream pies and is not far from where you are staying.

My recommendation is to make sure the route your iPhone maps is safe to drive.
We landed, got our rental car, and then mapped to our resort.
It took us on the “Maui death highway.” Talk about white knuckles!!!
My oldest son kept saying “look at this view!”
It’s because we were on the edge of a cliff on a single lane road!
We finally got to the resort and asked if there was a different way back to the airport because I wasn’t going that way again. They said, “you went the North route?!?!!!”
We told that story several times while we were there and got the same reaction every time.

Kapalua Beach, Napili Beach, and Blackrock Beach are our favorite to snorkel. I personally find them better than Molkini.
Make sure to make a stop at Ho'okipa Beach on the road to Hana to see the turtles on the shore. Surfers as well.
Mama's is great. I'd put Merriman's over the top of it personally, if its a 1 or the other option.
Don't miss the small places and food trucks. Some of the best food I've had on island came from them.
Make sure to leave enough time to just "be." I certainly understand not wanting to miss out, but the island is too incredible to not just get a drink, read a book, and chill.

We did the north route at sunrise the first day there when we woke at 3 am. I had no idea it was that sketchy and we literally had to move fallen rocks out of the road but got this shot! Went back to see the blowhole and realized that was a one time trip.
To OP - Keep going after Hana and circle the island as the back side is amazing too.

Highly recommended. I would also suggest going to Costco right there near the airport and pick up snorkeling gear (mask, fins and snorkel w/bag) for about $45 and throw in the trunk of your rental car. When driving around the island if you see a place like Naplil Bay you are set. At the end of your trip you can pack to take back with you, leave at the hotel or donate to a dive shop. Much preferred to renting snorkel sets used by tons of people.

North side drive to or from airport is worth it. Drive slow. You’ll never see scenery like that. Yes some parts one lane.
Making full circle from Hana also worth it. Parts of the backside is a dicey road. And rental car contract says you can’t go there. But it’s better than reversing from Hana.
If you don’t do the morning sunrise trip up the volcano, it’s still amazing to drive during the day.

I thought rental car companies won’t let you go too far back on the other side of Hana. Wanted to go to Bamboo Trail, but didn’t have time. Worth doing Hana once, but I wouldn’t do it again. We snorkeled at BlackRock Beach near the cliff. Mama’s Fish House is great, but pricey. You can usually get reservations the week or so before, but try to get them now. We also went to the National Park, but not at sunrise. Was only there 5 days.

We just got back from a trip over there about a month ago. We stayed in that same area and, as others have said, there are plenty of shops and places to eat within walking distance of your hotel. Whaler's Village is great albeit a bit pricey.
We booked most of our excursions through Viator. There are no shortage of options on that app. We booked Sea Maui for snorkeling which left right off Ka'anapali beach so it was really convenient. We also booked zip lining through Viator which is probably an underrated but fun excursion.
We did Road to Hana the day after we arrived since we were up at 4:30/5am anyway. We did not drive it and I can't imagine driving it. It has to be MUCH more enjoyable riding in a vehicle and taking in all the scenery rather than white knuckling that drive the entire time!

My personal favorite restaurant in Maui is Star noodle… I like the pork buns and garlic noodles
For road to Hana, I recommend buying/downloading Shaka Guide. It’s inexpensive and awesome, well worth the money, plays in your car, tells you where to go, and is great… highly highly recommend it for Road to Hana
Not sure if whale season, we always go in January, whale boat is cool, can be booked at Whaler’s Village
Always try to make dinner reservations in Maui, restaurants can be pretty crowded
