Looking at jobs in both places. Likely similar pay and quality of life (job-wise) in the long run. Visiting both for interviews in the next few weeks. Wife and I are both from New Orleans and have a 5 month old (will be 1 year when we move).

Macon - larger, 1.5hrs to Atlanta, further from home, maybe some stuff to do?
Florence - smaller, 1.5hrs to Huntsville/2 to Nashville, slightly closer to home, seems very small?

Does anybody have any thoughts on either of these places? I'll know more when I visit but trying to get some insight before going. Already interviewed in Columbia/Jeff City MO and going to Milwaukee soon so there's a few options on the table here for now.

That’s a tough one, I’d rather be in Florence than Macon, but that’s not saying much. ATL is a nightmare but definitely has more going on than Huntsville. Access to the ocean/beaches is easy from Macon, Savannah is a cool town.

It’s a toss up for me. I’d have to compare schools and what would give me the better bang for the buck.

Does one location offer better options for advancement within the company over the other location?

I don't know too much about Macon, but from surface level observations, I'd probably go with Florence over Macon. Florence, although extremely small, has somewhat of a nice and quaint downtown feel to it. Also, Muscle Shoals is right there and I assumed it still attracts music and artistic types.

Macon...well, they have Mercer University and some Allman Brothers history. That's all I've got.

Florence is great. It has a small town feel with mid size town options. Huntsville is close and might be the easiest airport in the country to fly out of.

Some good schools in the area too. I like the Killen area personally but Muscle Shoals is good too if your job is south of the bridge.

If you’re on the south side of Muscle Shoals and like golf, Twin Pines CC. Reasonable and a good track

Not really. Florence may end up having higher pay down the road but they should both be similar for a few years with comparable hours overall. Macon may have more vacation at least up front but I’ll probably find this out soon.

Thanks - these are great responses so far.

I lived 45 minutes from Macon and can't think of any reason I'd ever want to be in Macon again. The only plus I can think of is the Atlanta airport isn't too far and has direct flights to most places you'd ever want to go.

I was not going to comment because I haven’t been to Florence.
But northern Alabama is nice. Huntsville is a nice little city.

Macon is a crap hole. Public schools are bad.
Close to Atlanta and pro sports. 2 1/2 hours to Savannah is great. But if you go there look into a neighboring county for schools.

There are some nice lake communities around Macon and property is cheap.

I moved to alabama back in 2011 for work and I lived in Huntsville for 9mo before moving to Birmingham. I am in sales and my territory was North Alabama so I spent a lot of time in Florence/Muscle Shoals area. It is very nice up there and it is 1.5hrs from Huntsville, a little under 2hrs from Birmingham and the same for Nashville. All 3 of those cities offer a unique feel and things to do.
Now that I’m in Birmingham I have to travel a lot through Atlanta. I despise that place with a passion due to the number of people and traffic they have. If I never set foot in that city again, I’d be fine with that.

I'd be happy with that too especially if you can get a whole lot more to join you.

I lived in Macon for about a year, and it is awful. Part of it was my stage in life at the time as I was just out of college. There really wasn't a fun scene for people my age. Even with 2 colleges in town, I never really found a typical college scene there. It was really hard to meet people as the town was very cliquish. It may be different if you're slightly older and have kids though.

I've only visited Florence, and had fun, but not sure about life there full time.

fwiw every single person I know from Macon went to an expensive private school... I would factor that in your decision unless you want to roll the dice on one of the public schools down there

I live in Macon. It's not nearly as bad as this board would have you believe. There are plenty of good things going on in the revitalization of the downtown area. And those who say there's nothing to do are the types of people who don't do much regardless. Feel free to ask me anything specific you'd like to know.

I will say, however, that unless you plan on living in the Monroe County area and commuting, you'll want to be putting you children through private school which will cost 12-15k a year through the high school years.

Like most smaller cities in GA, they're great if you're old money Macon/Albany/Columbus/etc. and shitty for everyone else.

if you are either into the trash culture or the ghetto culture, then Macon is the place for you.

There is the southern society culture too, but breaking in would be hard.

I've spent time both places. Macon is trash. Hoodrats everywhere. I wouldn't go back there for double my salary.

I just spent a long weekend in Florence, AL. It's one of my favorite towns in AL. It's a small college town right on the TN River. Cool downtown area full of college kids and neat places to eat, one of the better breweries in the state with Singing River, and all the big town stuff you may need (chain restaurants, Wal-Mart, etc). It also has a Robert Trent Jones golf course and it's close to Huntsville and 2 hours from Bham.

I could easily see myself living there, but I love to fish and Florence puts you minutes away from three of the best lakes in Alabama: Wilson, Pickwick, and Wheeler.

I played The RTJ course from the tips not long after it opened. I don’t think I hit less than a 3 iron into any of the par 4’s and hit driver off the deck trying to get there on two of them.

Needless to say I never did that again. Gives you a real appreciation for how good the pros are with long irons
