Help me out guys. Heading to Gatlinburg in July. Not looking to drive there in one day. What's a cool halfway or more point to stay at leaving from Louisiana.

Hoover alabama is always our knock off spot. Looks for a hotel around John Hawkins pkwy. Our go to is the Hyatt place there. Really good free breakfast

Not halfway, but we stop in Chattanooga. Then the next day it’s 3 hours to Gatlinburg.

Find a place on the ridge in Mentone, AL.
You won’t regret it.

If you don’t stop in Bham, there won’t be many good options until Chattanooga.

We’re doing it also in July. Our plan is to stay two nights in Chattanooga and do Rock City and Ruby falls. Then get up the next morning and take the day to take the scenic route thru Murphy and Bryson City from south into Gatlinburg. This is the way we did it when I was a kid and this is my sons first trip to the smokies.

Can you elaborate on this? Years ago someone told me Mentone was a good place to visit, haven't thought about it until now.

We always stay at the Holiday Inn Express just on the other side of Birmingham at the Trussville exit. Clean and a decent free breakfast. We wake up and avoid the morning rush hour in Birmingham. It's right next to the interstate, so it's a quick breakfast and jump on the road.

Not going to be any hotels up there. You’d have to find a house on AirBnB or something like that. It’s a nice place for a weekend cabin. Not as practical for a one night stay.

rock city

Rock City is up there as one of the more pleasantly surprising attractions I've been to. Went in the winter during a little snow event and had the whole place to myself.

In response to the guy above I am trying to picture how you are staying in Chattanooga and then getting to Gatlinburg from the South by way of Bryson City and Murphy.

Honestly I had to look at the map and I have been to Gatlinburg probably 10-12 times and Murphy about 5 times.

Chestnut Bay resort.

Stay on the lake.

I like house #5.

Lots to do there

If you have kids, it’s very worthwhile.

The Little River Canyon is close by as well.

If it’s just you and the missus, consider Gotham’s bluff in Pigdah, Alabama.

Are you asking how I would do it because you don’t think it’s possible?
I-75 -> hwy 74 -> hwy 19 -> Hwy 441 comes into Gatlinburg from the south.

It’s Gorham’s Bluff in Pisgah. Nice but way off the interstate.

Next time try getting off at Calhoun and taking backroads to Tellico Plains and across the Cherohala Skyway 143 into Robbinsville all the way to Stecoah and use 28 to hook with your 74 route to 441.

Skyway is amazing if you haven't ever been on it. As good as anything in the park. They have a lot of gravel routes through there too that are beautiful.

Muscle Shoals area. Just stayed there a few weeks ago. Never realized that more hits came out of that area than Los Angeles, New York or Nashville. It’s the Hits Capital of the World. Two music Studios cranked them out for decades. Recordings still done there today.
