The wife is wanting to head to New York over July 4th (Wednesday to Sunday) for a trip. Flights are $200 out of NOLA and some of her cousins have an AirBnB property in Tribeca so we can stay for free.

I know its New York so there are obviously tons of things to do, I am just not a fan of sight seeing or touristy things and it seems like that is what New York vacations revolve around. I wouldn't mind seeing a show on Broadway, the Museum of Natural History and 9/11 Museum, but outside of those things and eating nice dinners, what else can we try and do?

outside of seeing nationally famous landmarks and eating great food what else is there? What exactly do you want from a vacation? Serious question..I konw you said you're not into seeing touristy stuff, what is it you'd want if you could pick the location?

You're gonna be hard pressed to EVER beat a $400 total expense on airfare and lodging for 2 in NYC for a 5 day stay.

There you go. Pretty solid argument in favor of New York.

Most of my favorite vacations have revolved around activities (skiing, hiking/camping, fishing/hunting, golf) and I love being on or close to the water.

Since she really wants to go, its basically a done deal. I guess what I am really trying to do is just find some off the beaten path activities that we could also incorporate into a trip to avoid five days of nothing but breakfast, lunch dinner and walking around the city. Although it sounds like that may be unavoidable.

Wife and I had this argument the other day. She only wants beach trips but now wants NYC. I want like you stated you prefer, I’m shite out of luck right now. My daughter wants beach still and boys too young to care.

You sound like a blast to go on vacation with. It's one of the largest cities in the world - pretty sure you can fill 5 days with entertaining stuff without being super touristy.

Go to smaller/local bars to listen to live music
Check out some of the smaller comedy clubs
Visit some of the breweries in Brooklyn
Go out to Williamsburg, it's a beautiful area
See a play off Broadway

Or maybe just do some of the things your wife wants to do even if it's touristy.

My advice would be to get over yourself and see NYC. See the sights. You don’t have to wait in line everywhere but it would be a crime to go to NYC for that cheap and then do nothing.

Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge
Go to the Highline and walk it.
Do a Broadway show.
Walk through Central Park.
Free walking tour of grand central station.
Hit some golf balls at a range overlooking the Hudson.
Have a drink at a rooftop bar overlooking the Empire State Building.
Take the Staten Island Ferry past the Statue of Liberty and back again.

They do, some people try to tell people dont stay there or go here because thats where the tourist go, but thats what you are in Manhattan. Just embrace it. There is actually a decent amount of stuff to keep most entertained and its not that bad like tourist traps in beach towns or places in the middle of no where.

I went the week of July 4 a few years ago. Stayed in Times Square area and had a blast. I went solo, and it wasn't my first time in NYC. Find a rooftop to watch fireworks on the 4th- it was the best fireworks show I've seen.

I'm heading there for Memorial Day with the family, I love being there. Such a big city, the sights, smells, sounds make you feel alive. I love riding the subway, interacting with people that we would never seen in S Louisiana.

Not saying its all roses, but its vacation- just enjoy being somewhere different for a few days. And yes, there are awesome deals on direct flights MSY-NYC right now.

You can do a lot of things in New York City from sports to broadway to sightseeing to dining
You will walk a lot and stay busy

For a relaxaing vacation I would say no

Have you ever seen the fireworks over New York Harbor on the 4th ? This would be worth the whole trip just on its own.

You can take a boat ride around the harbor and see Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island up close.

You can literally spend 3 days walking around Manhattan and not even make a dent.

You are on the water in NYC , beaches are easily accessible, Christopher Street Pier, can rent a boat for the day and ride around or go fishing. Hikes in both Central Park and Prospect Park could easily fill a day. Plenty of golf ranges and courses nearby if you want to spend a day doing that. NYC has everything which is what makes it great. You can do as little or as much as you want.

Staten Island Ferry is a free, an hour boat ride with some good views and cheap beers.

I mention this a lot on here

I like to check Atlas Obscura for alternative ideas.

My big thing lately has been to go to the oldest restaurants in a city/area. Just real classic joints with really old recipes/style you can’t find anymore. That’s been a fun way to kill time on business trips. Like eating history.

I looked into this. They have tickets for a dinner cruise that ends with watching the fireworks. We will definitely do that if we go. Thanks everyone for the responses.

We will check out Fraunes Tavern, it is the site of the first continental congress in 1774.

The Ikea ferry is also free on the weekends and will dump you in redhook which is an interesting old port that is one of the last areas of NYC that hasn't gotten developed (in a good way). Some cool bars/restaurants over there
