Looking to take the wife and kids to see an Astros game and maybe do some things with the kids. Last time just wife and I stayed, we got to close to Minutemaid and stayed in a nice place but across the street from a homeless shelter/food bank and it got a little dicey. Hoping for some recommendations yall have stayed at.

My favorite in recent years has been the Icon.

This will have the most fun pool for the kids. It will also be one of the most expensive.
Before and right after a game, I'd walk anywhere around downtown. You'll see tons of Astro fans. Even in EaDo, on the other side of 59, you can walk. I'd just stay on the main areas there. You must have somehow gotten near the homeless shelter around Congress on the other side of 59, although I'm not sure how that was close to a hotel.
In downtown Houston, it's possible to see some homeless. They are harmless. Just keep walking with the crowd.

I'm a fan of Club Quarters which is like 2 blocks from the Stadium. Nice place to stay and fairly cheap

Marriott Marquis, it's got the Texas shaped lazy river on the roof. HOWEVER, they will close the pool if the wind speed is too high. Do not plan on walking anywhere east of 59, or anywhere you can't see from the hotel, really.

Folks love the rooftop at the Marquis for good reason. If you want to save some coin, the Residence Inn at the Galleria is nice as well with a kid friendly pool. It's in a very good area with plenty of shopping and food.
