We had an awful experience at Louie's and would not go back.

We did enjoy 5 Brothers, Hogfish, Blue Haven, Keys Fisheries in Marathon and Schnoor Warf Bar. Lots of hole in the wall places. Overall a nice food destination.

I’m bummed to hear that. It was our best meal on the island by a long shot.

I'm suprised to hear that too. I'm going to Lattitudes for lunch tomorrow, Louies BY on Friday, and BH for breakfast on Sunday. Lattitudes is definetely a gimmick, but if you've never been it's nice. We go for the view, the food is ok, nothing is actually made there its brought over from the Opal Hotel. Too many bums hang out around Harpoon Harry's for me. Not a fan of Hogfish at all partly cause the owner is an asshat, but I love B.O.'s Fish Wagon. Better Than Sex was much better at the original location. I try and not go there at all.

I forgot to mention in my previous post but across from Captain Tonys is a taco place called Amigos that was pretty solid.

Be careful about drinking and biking

The trikes are the same price as bicycles. With the number of bars, it's a good idea.

I have to decide whether to forego drinking or biking?
Well, I guess it will depend on the time of day.

Not if you’re only having a couple but it can be difficult to navigate some tight corridors on a bike there if you’re hammered. The island is extremely walkable especially if you’re staying in Old Town so opt to walk in that case.

Eat plenty of Key Lime Pie

Pick up a copy of the book Undying Love. - weird but intriguing to say the least.

Hammered or not anything on two wheels is pretty dangerous in Key West. There's 25k+ vehichles on a 4x2 island. Once a week someone on a two wheeled vehicle is killed. This week's edition was a motorcylist on US1, last week there was a really bad scooter accident involving a bouncer from Ricks. Couple years ago a chef from Benihana got ran over twice by a semi in front of Green Parrot in the middle of the afternoon. It's best to just uber or walk.

Go to the DJ clam shack and get the lobster roll. It is a hole in the wall, but the best lobster roll I have ever had.

I’ve only been to Key West on a cruise a couple of times. I’m curious, is that Key West or is that just the part of town the cruisers frequent? Is there an entirely different area that is too far for the cruise folks to walk to. I wondered this as we walked around. I just felt there had to be more that I am not seeing.

Of course. You could never possibly “get” Key West in part of a day.

Things your wife might like based on my wife

Butterfly Sanctuary

The young adult/children's author Judy Blume has a bookstore in Key West and is often working at the store. My wife had read all of her books growing up and was excited to see her at the store.

Hemingway House

Snorkelling trip

Sunset cruise

Thanks for the great suggestions. We just got back Monday night and I thought I would post a report.

We stayed at the Key West Bed and Breakfast, a wonderful little place on a quiet street a few blocks off Duval.

The weather was nice the whole time. Hot in the daytime, a little cooler at night.

There is no crime in Key West. You can walk the streets at all hours of the day and night with no safety concerns whatsoever. For one thing, there is no place for criminals to escape to.

We toured the Hemingway House and Harry Truman's Little White House. We did not spend much time at the beach but we did go to Fort Zachary Taylor and walked over to the adjacent beach. Nice enough.
Another unique thing we did was go to the Butterfly Conservatory where you walk around an enclosed tropical garden with hundreds of colorful butterflies flying around you. Pretty cool.

We went to Sloppy Joe's, both the current one and the original one from Hemingway's time which is now Captain Tony's. Like most tourists we spent more time at the new one.

We ate at some fantastic restaurants -

Latitudes-
You take a boat there. They knew it was our anniversary and gave us a prime table outside overlooking the water. Delicious food in a beautiful setting.

Louie's Back Yard-
Another excellent restaurant overlooking the water. Had dinner there Easter Sunday night. Jimmy Buffet used to live next door and gives it a shout out in "Trying to Reason With Hurricane Season".

Seaside Cafe at the Southernmost Point-
We ate there the first night at a table right next to the water. The specialty is Lobster pizza.

Santiago's Botega-
Excellent Spanish tapas bar style restaurant. Nice atmosphere but this was the only time we ate indoors.

Blue Heaven-
Fun and lively place with good food.

This was our first time to Key West and we will be back. We enjoyed it.
