I once flew into Newark then took train to Penn station. Then the shuttle to JFK.
Wasn't that bad. I was solo with people I would have gotten a car service.

OP if you have Bilt you might be able to look into a blade transfer if this is something you are still thinking about

You did mention that you weren't checking bags a few times, but it's not common to not check bags on a "long haul" flight for leisure, so his brain did what mine initially did, which was presume facts not in evidence. A flight to Puerto Rico is one thing, but Europe with first class and free checked bags is kind of odd.

I'd consider spending the previous night in NYC if I was retired. Fly up the day before, spend the night, half day in NYC, then catch a flight out.

If not retired and need a better schedule, yeah too much risk. I'm by no means someone that stresses and frankly I like tight schedules. But being comfortably prepared and set for an overseas flight especially going on a vacation I'm looking forward to, is not something I'd do this for.

If it was for a work trip and I didn't care if I made it, sure I'd attempt it.

I am one of those people who tends to err on the side of caution because a trip that involves a flight (especially an international flight) is typically a sizable financial expenditure that could be costly and/or very frustrating if unforeseen circumstances frick it up.

ATL is my home airport and has been for years, and I still arrive 3-4 hours early in spite of not even checking luggage and always having reserved parking. I like to have enough time to handle one unexpected problem (wreck on the interstate, security lines are long for some reason, etc.) without jeopardizing my flight.

An extra hour or two of sitting at the airport is a small price to pay for some buffer time, and it’s not like I am going to be pulling out of Sydney Sweeney early to have it.

I also typically like to eat at the airport before I fly because I hate airplane food, so that’s one thing I do with the extra time if all goes smoothly from door to inside security.

they announced today the last day of a differentiated service for flagship first being november 19

you will most likely either get put into the new business class product if you have a retrofitted 777 or will have the flagship first seat but the same service as business class if it isnt

they should be willing to refund you the fare difference

We are one of the first routes to change from Flagship First to the Business suites

Yep I agree. Especially for a vacation. There's nothing worse than starting off vacation fighting with your spouse on time, packing, etc because you tried to cut your airport arrival, layover, etc. too tight.

Now, going back home, may as well get back in the groove...

Can also look into British Airways. The miles cost is very reasonable with AA, but the fees are definitely higher

They are typically pretty generous with the amount of seats they release once they get closer to your date

Not sure where you're going but could you parlay this into AA putting you on the BA flight from MSY-LHR?
