That is what we are considering. Its actually two hours less travel time.
However, we currently can't change as last night they prompted us that our flight was about to change again and we couldn't change anything until that went through

They did indeed
We are Platinum Pro with AA, and we did use miles for these flights like 10 months ago because it was an incredibly low mileage amount for First.

I am pretty experienced traveler and have packing down pretty well between my carry on suitcase and "personal item" backpack that is essentially a 2nd suitcase.

I do about 5-6 long haul international trips a year. I check a bag every time for three reasons
1) I always bring gifts to my team, usually whiskey
2) they always send me home with a bunch of stuff for the kids
3) they occasionally delay my bag and I get free clothes on the airlines dime

I once had to go 4 days in Paris without my luggage. I vowed never again.
The next time it happened because an airline literally forced us to and guess what? 2 days without luggage.
I simply see no reason to do it.
I don't bring much back usually, I am a good packer, my backpack is specifically designed to essentially be a 2nd suitcase but still qualify (barely) as an underseat personal item.
And I am happy to pay a hotel to do laundry if necessary (or at an Airbnb), if it avoids:
Me having to lug around a massive suitcase
Luggage getting lost
Waiting 30 minutes for my luggage to finally come when I'm ready to hit the ground running
Waiting 1 hour at MSY for it to come when I just want to go home

I'm generally like you, I almost never check domestic, and try not to on international trips. And like you said between my roller and backpack, and using cubes and packing efficiently, I can knock out 10-12 days easy. That said, challenge is what you want to bring back with you.
If we do check, and its just me and the wife we only check 1 big suitcase, and only pack it half-full going with nothing we need for the first 3 days if something happens. We usually fill it up on the trip home with stuff we are bringing back that has to be checked like alcohol.

Wine, cigars, duty free alcohol, clothing,, etc
All that aside, I’ll trust any international airline with my luggage over a wash and fold or hotel laundry service.
Damaged, delayed or lost luggage can be replaced at no cost to me plus there is ample credit card protection for lost or delayed baggage.
Checking a bag for international flights not only saves me time while on vacation it gives more flexibility.
Lastly, it’s less shite I have to lug through airports with connections.
All that aside, I’ll trust any international airline with my luggage over a wash and fold or hotel laundry service.

Yes but you have to wait at baggage claim and if you have any tight connections or delays, pray to god it makes it. I've had way too many close calls with delays to do that.
MSY in particular takes FOREVER for baggage claim. You get off a 12 hour flight and want to wait another 30-45 minutes for your luggage? Or just go home and get some sleep?

First, I don’t book tight connections for international flights regardless of checking a bag, that’s just asking for issues. And yes, MSY can take longer than others for baggage claim but if you fly first your bags come out first so it won’t be 45 minutes. Not to mention, any laundry you do on vacation takes time too. How much time depends on how it’s done but it’s not like it’s baggage claim and time or laundry and no time.
The time it takes is a small cost to pay for flexibility while in another country, ease navigating other airports and overhead bins.
Not to mention, I want nothing under the seat in front of me on an international flight so I’ll pack a carry-on and use that for my lithium batteries because I don’t want anything around my feet
