Looking at a trip to Montana in July and flights are expensive. My question to the travel experts is do you expect prices to level out by the end of the summer or continue to rise? I know its speculation at this point, but I need to buy six tickets and would appreciate opinions. I am thinking that they will either continue to rise or flatten out, but not go down.

There won’t be a massive change in ticket price between now and booking

It's very expensive this summer so far. I booked about a month or two ago for August and glad I did, haven't seen prices go down yet. If you see a decent price especially for 6 people, then I'd probably book it. If prices go down, you can always rebook and get an ecredit for the difference

I fly for work every other week. Prices have been escalating dramatically … it’s crazy

Yes, its crazy. If it was one or tow tickets it wouldn't be a big deal, but six adds up pretty quickly.

Drive.

Drove to Montana last Summer from Texas, was a great road trip.

Flying is just not worth it now, unless you are traveling over a body of water.

High oil prices + Return in demand + General inflation pressures = High prices

I'd be surprised if there is a big decrease in the short term. The ability to easily cancel flights for credits makes jumping on tickets easier if they drop in price.

Driving 20+ hours isn’t an option for everyone. Depending on which way you look at it, it also either decreases the time you have at your destination by 2-3 days at minimum, or increases the time you need to take off work by 2-3 days.

I drive to Breckenridge every summer from Houston. But I would NEVER even consider it if I couldn’t be away from work for at least 10+ days to make it worth all that driving.

They might be adding more flights soon, a lot of the ones I've been trying to book in the upcoming months are getting sold out

Nope, if anything airlines are still cutting flights due to staffing shortages. The regional airlines are the ones most affected but it's happening for every airline big or small

I would happily disagree. We make the road trips part of the vacation. We take back roads a lot and see the things off the beaten path. The journey can be even better than the destination.

Fair point, of course. However to do a trip that way you need much more time than someone planning a 6-7 day trip and hoping to spend all of that time at their destination.

I have been watching prices for a flight to Jackson Hole in September. Wasn't seeing much movement so I booked about a month ago. I checked again this week and the price has doubled.

Yeah booked our flight begrudgingly to punta Cana last month because of prices but looked yesterday and that same flight is 300 more. Thank goodness I didn’t wait or our butts would be driving somewhere for vacation

I just priced tickets from Houston to Hawaii in October, and for 4 people it’s around $2k??! That’s about what we paid for our St. Thomas flight last summer. I’ve never priced that route so I have nothing to compare it to.

$2K total or per person? $2K total for 4 people to Hawaii is pretty reasonable

Yeah that’s the total price for the 4 of us. Like I said that’s the exact amount we paid for St. Thomas/St. John so I would of course drop it for Hawaii!

I need to go there in July for family reasons and looked at flights today. The better flights are $1000+ I even checked flying into Idaho Falls

Where in Montana are you headed? A few years ago family went skiing in western Montana, the best price on flights were to Spokane, Washington. Just a short drive across the skinny part of Idaho.

I’ve been watching flights into Kalispell for a month now for my trip in august. They were $450 and I didnt pull the trigger. This week they climbed up to $600 and today are back at $500. I think I’m going to just go ahead and book now.
