Closest Nice Beach to LA

Our family has always gone to the Destin area once a year, but I’d like to start going a few times a year on shorter trips. Which beaches/hotels have y’all enjoyed in MS/AL? Or should we continue to make the trek all the way to Destin? TIA

Where are you starting your trip from?

The quality of sand and water in Destin cannot be matched anywhere in the continental US. The water in the Florida Keys is great but there is no sand.

Holly Beach Baw.
"Holly Beach is also known as the 'Cajun Riviera'."

IMO, the 30a stretch has the best water/sand combo (it's essentially an extension of Destin).

The drive to Orange Beach/Perdido Key, or Pensacoula is very easy for shorter trips, especially if you time your departure correctly to miss the worst of the Mobil traffic.
Rule out MS as the beaches and water are a huge step down.
As for hotels, which is the correct choice for a short two night stay (instead of condos), what are you interested in?

Live in Covington LA now. Yeah I was thinking Orange Beach would be a good option to save a few hours of drive time. Any hotels walking distance to the beach you recommend?

Perdido Key is smaller and quieter, yet you can still drive to the Gulf Shores madness in 20-30 minutes.

In Orange Beach there is a Hampton Inn and a Hilton that are nice. If you want to spend some $$, the Perdido Beach Resort is nice(small rooms though).
To the west toward Gulfshores, there is a Hilton Resort on State Park property that has lots of activities and is in a less crowded area.
In Pensacoula is a nice Hilton resort and a Hampton next door do it.

Mexico beach is a little further and I dont know what its like after getting destroyed by a hurricane.
Other option if you want the closest to the NS is anything between dauphin island and orange beach.

I've visited/stayed in/boated all over the northern gulf from Galveston to Tampa Bay.
From my experience and observation, the best water/beach quality is centered along the northern gulf between the bay openings at Pensacola and Panama City. It's still pretty good on either side, but water quality (and beach quality) subsides quickly the further you move away from that center, with one major exception: Dauphin Island water is bad, primarily because of Mobile Bay/Mobile River water. Strangely, the next Barrier island west (Petit Bois) usually has BEAUTIFUL water, and the water quality gets worse as you head westward along those islands.
Mexico Beach is okay, water wise, but not as nice as Perdido/Orange Beach/Gulf Shores.
East of Cape San Blas, around Apalachicola, you might as well be in Biloxi/Gulfport/Bay St. Louis.

Plus you only have to walk 50 feet to get from one air brushed t-shirt store to another one!

Once upon a time (post Katrina, pre BP), Ship Island MS was a fantastic combo of sand, water, and solitude. Not sure how it is lately.

Gulf shores and Orange Beach are already closer and better

It still is. Can get crowded near the ferry pier, but there's a lot of room to spread out. We anchor on the N side for the kids to play in calmer water. South side has chair rentals and what not.
