My wife and I will be headed to Charleston for New Years, and I'm looking for things to do. We'll be staying downtown on Cumberland St., but not opposed to venture out a little one of the days we'll be there.

On the food side, I have my dinner reservations and 1/1 brunch lined out, so I'm looking for lunch recommendations. Would like some top notch bbq at least once or twice.

We're going to try to brave the cold and try to get on the rooftop bar at the Vendue for NYE.

Planning to spend some time in the Market and shopping on King St. to appease the wife.

Beyond that the cold weather has me a little worried. I want to go to Ft Sumter, but I imagine we might freeze to death.

Any ideas that aren't going to be too bitterly cold? Anything historical, plantations, etc... Pretty much anything fun for a young couple.

Honestly, unless it's just a bucket list item you want to knock off, I would skip it. There really isn't much to see there. You get much more interesting history by the walking tour on the waterfront

Jeni's splendid ice cream is the tits.

I really enjoy going to Middleton and Magnolia Plantation. I am always there in the summer though, so we spend a lot of time just walking around the grounds. Looks like the weather might take a little fun out of it around New Years.

Charleston is a super cool town though. Hope you enjoy your trip.

Do a TD search on the food board. There are numerous threads with restaurant recommendations.

Magnolia should have camellias in bloom. Middleton should always have something blooming, but yeah, I can't imagine it would be all that fun walking around outside in the cold - although we love both places.

Some of the houses on the battery may still be decorated for Christmas, so you might wan to check that out.

Check out the Hunley while you are there. It was amazing. It’s indoors.

The Charleston Museum is worth a visit. Take the boat tour to Fort Sumter. It’s history, and beautiful for that fact alone. Go to The Charleston Exchange and Provost...excellent museum and walking tour. Do the Food Board search for recs.

I just got back a few weeks ago and really enjoyed my time. It’s a fun city that is easily walkable. Unfortunately it was freezing when we were there so I’d love to go back in warmer weather and really appreciate the sights.

ETA: we stayed at The Vendue. It’s an incredible hotel and very affordable. They have perks like complimentary wine and food from 4-5, milk and cookies from 9-11 pm, and a constantly refilled decanter of sherry in every room.

A few highlights that I’d recommend during your stay:

Walking Tour
We did a (freezing) walking tour with Oyster Point Tours. Our guide really knew her history and architecture and was super energetic. I’d definitely recommend them (only $21a person).

Although not an official tour, we rode bikes around the College of Charleston. It’s a really cool campus that did a great job at preserving the old architecture of its buildings.

Food
This really was the highlight of the trip for us. A few of the standouts:

Breakfast:
Black Tap Coffee - small casual coffee shop right off the College of Charleston campus. My wife really wanted to go for their lavender latte and it didn’t disappoint.

Lunch:
Brown Dog Deli - good casual spot for killer sandwiches.
Husk - great menu but get the hamburger and thank me later.

Dinner:
McGrady’s - sat at the bar during happy hour. It’s a gorgeous historical building and bar. The bartenders were very knowledgeable on all the dishes and explained each one in detail. By far our favorite dining experience.

The Ordinary - great oyster focused restaurant. Coming from Nola where oysters are plentiful I was skeptical about going here. I’m glad we did. They offered all sorts or oysters sourced from around the country and prepared them in unique ways.

Beer
Westbrook Brewing - a 20 minute drive from downtown Charleston but we’ll worth the trip. Their bourbon barrel aged beers are legendary.

Edmund’s Oast - not only do they have great food but they also have a superior draft selection of both their own beers as well as those around the country. There also is a bottle exchange shop next door where you can bring back home anything you really enjoyed.

Cocktails:
Charleston has a ton of great cocktail bars but The Dewberry really stood out. It’s a swanky bar in the recently restored hotel. It has a Mad Men vibe, great cocktail, and live music. Perfect for a relaxing evening where you’re not looking to hop around.

Forgot about McGrady's. Good call.

We had supper there. It was good, but not outstanding. I'd try new places before I went back there.

We mainly did oysters at The Ordinary. If that’s what you seek, go there.

I would recommend a harbor cruise on a sailboat but not this week. It’s cold as hell.

Unfortunately this is just bad timing for you. Charleston has a lack of indoor things to do, so your best bets will be eating/drinking as much as you can. Go to the museum and maybe the Yorktown for some (mostly) indoor stuff. All of the cool sights are mainly outdoors.

Thanks for all of the help everybody. We were at Middleton Place overnight, so we’re going to hang out here for the morning before going into town this afternoon.

Again, thanks. Will definitely be checking out some of these spots y’all have listed.
