We are flying in/out of Munich in early December and will spend a few days in the city and visit Dachau during that time. From there, we are renting a car and driving about the region for 3 days/2 nights.

This is what we were thinking:
Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Fussen to Rothenburg

We plan on doing a hike and checking out the gorge in Garmisch-Paternkirchen, strolling the town of Fussen, viewing Ludwigs nearby castle and a Christmas market in Rothenburg.

Stops to add?

Trying not to do any art museums or tours. I wanted to see Eagles Nest, but it is closed in December.

Also thought about changing it all together and making the roadtrip in Austria. So many choices in that region too!

Any suggestions are appreciated. It seems like many people on the board have spent a good deal of time in this area

You will need to be very diligent in researching what is open that time of year. I don’t have any experience in December to help you unfortunately, but I do know a lot of things will likely have limited hours and days. If there is snow some roads may close.

All 3 of Ludwig’s castles are certainly worth visiting. The 2nd is something like 45-60 mins from Fussen but it’s back roads so not sure again about December.

Salzburg is nearby, and lovely in December, with several nice Christmas markets in a couple of spots around town...including one atop the hill at the Hohensalzburg fortress.

Unless you're adamant about seeing that don't go. It's depressing and will bum you out the rest of the trip.

Salzburg and western Austria are beautiful. Especially Hallstatt which is south of Salzburg. Hallstatt is the town you see when you imagine a picturesque mountain lake town.

Agree here. We spent several days in Munich for Oktoberfest several years back, and made the trip to Dachau. We had a few hours to spend, but it wasn't enough to study the whole area (more of a walk-through). It was eerily somber and definitely deflating.

We took a trip to Neuschwanstein Castle one day, and took the train to Saulzburg for a long day trip. Both were worth the trip.

Why go to Dachau. The holocaust happened, why spend a day on that shite. It’s so macabre.

Go to Regensburg, Nuremberg, Salzburg, or Bechestgated/Eagles Nest

Here is my trip report from earlier this year that covers some of the areas you are considering.

I am also for visiting Dachau. Yes, it is sobering, but something you should see. I have been to Auschwitz also, so if you have been there, you can skip. But something I think everyone should see.

Old Town Nuremberg is definitely worth a trip. It's about a 2-hour drive.

As mentioned, Salzburg another great one and 2 hours away.

Nuremberg also has one of the best Christmas markets.

Thank you for the link! Looks like a great trip.
Did you prefer the Garmisch or Partenkirchen side more? Also, was the trip to the top of the mountain worth the views. It seems like there is a lot of travel time associated with making it to the peak. Hoping we will be able to get some good views from the top of the gorge instead.

I have read tons of WWII/Hollocaust books so I feel like experiencing Dachau is a must, even though it will definitely be sobering.

With the current stops we already have, would y’all think it would be better to add Salzburg or Nuremberg to the trip?

Definitely visit Dachau. If you're pretty familiar with WWII and Holocaust history it won't ruin your trip - you'll have heard and seen worse than you'll experience in your visit. That it's so heavily reconstructed will probably also keep it from being too much to handle. Honestly, the most startling thing about it is seeing how close the town is and just imagining that not all that long ago it was but one of many, many more just like it, some much, much worse. There is quite a juxtaposition about seeing that (and many of the Nazi buildings left standing in the vicinity) and knowing that a couple blocks away people are going to work and having lunch with this in their backyard. It's fascinating, if brutal, stuff.

I really loved the Partinkirchen side. You can go visit the old 36 Winter Olympics arena (if you are lucky there will be people ski jumping) and then take the 20-30 minute walk up to Partnachklamm which is a must.

And if you are into engineering, the cable car up to Zugspitz is amazing, and when up there on a clear day can see Austria, Germany, and Switzerland.

I like Salzburg, but Nuremberg is the place for WW2 and old town markents. In Nuremberg, the old court where Nuremberg trails were held is an hour at most, and walking around town is great with a hike up to the fort/castle.

And for history, you have to go the old Nuremberg grounds and the musuem beside it.

I found Dachau exceptionally depressing...if you go, go toward the end of your trip.

the Deutsches Museum in Munich is well worth visiting, wonderful car collection and other things as well...

If you're into cathedrals, the Munster in Ulm is worth seeing (and climbing as it's the highest steeple in Europe if not the world)

Thanks for all of the info. It looks like Ulm could be a good spot if we don’t have time for Nuremberg. I think we will skip Austria and just stick to Garmisch, Fussen and then the romantic road north to Rothenburg or Nuremberg. It looks like about a 2.5 hour drive from Fussen to Rothenburg so we should be ok on time.

We were planning on just seeing where we end up each night before booking hotels, but do y’all have any favorites along this route? Or restaurants?

What time of the week? No way I’d do that in the Alps during ski season on the weekend. If they get fresh powder you could be SOL.

Most of the places are small mountain towns with small hotels like 5-15 rooms. Nothing like the states. If the weather is bad and it gets dark early, I’m not sure I’d want to have to drive awhile until you are able to find a place to stay. There’s numerous people on the board that can give you a better idea on this. In November I wouldn’t have an issue at all doing this, I’d just worry about fresh snow in December.

There are routes that are fast and there are routes that seem like they would be fast and take forever. If you won’t be on an interstate I’d plan the drive to be considerably slower than you’d expect.

We did this 2 years ago. A lot of things will be closed but the slopes may or may not be open yet. Several people said that they have been getting their snow later and later. First week in December 2 years ago, they were spraying fake snow on all the slopes to try to get them open. Ludwig's castles are a must do. Neuschwanstein Castle is gorgeous. Mary's Bridge usually closes by the first week of December so you will probably not get that breathtaking view from there. Just know that the castle is WAY up a hill. Its a good 30 minute walk up a pretty steep incline. It's a nice hike though. You can also rent a horse drawn carriage to take you up most of the way. As others have said, Oberammergau is a cute little town. You will be right at the beginning of the Christmas markets. There are many great ones all over. Try the french fries with mayo and onions. There is a great kiosk in the Marienplatz christkindlmarkt. Get a currywurst as well. Come before noon and watch the Glockenspiel. Its really cool. There are better Christmas markets in other towns but that one is good to get your beak wet on. Drink much Gluhwein! Add a shot of amaretto or rum. Keep the glass.
Also, drink as much Augustiner beer as you can!

Here's the long term weather forcast for this December 1
LINK

The sun will be above the horizon for 8 hours and 41 minutes
and you can see for yourself the probability of cloud cover.
Allow for the sun setting at 4:23 pm.

The last time I was near there in latest November, it was so damned gloomy that we took off for Spain.
