Good morning, Travel Board!

My wife and I are taking a 10-day pilgrimage trip to several sites in Spain and Italy in October, and have a few questions about attire.

We've been told that many of the churches, basilicas, and religious sites will not allow us in if we are wearing shorts (me) or wearing a sleeveless outfit (my wife), and that we'll need long pants and covered shoulders to enter.

I've never traveled to Europe, and when my wife has it was more as a "tourist" and not really going to these types of sites. We are wondering what type of outfits are best for this type of trip - I am comfortable walking around in polo shirt and khaki pants, and she likes to wear dresses. Alternatively, are jeans acceptable for these types of trips?

Any wisdom you have would be great!

Wear pants. If your wife wears a dress have her bring a cardigan to put on top if need be to go inside churches.

My wife and I encountered this a few times in Italy. We found the shorts rule was...inconsistent.

But just to be safe wear pants, have your wife bring a shawl that she can wrap around her shoulders.

One funny thing with inconsistency, my wife was wearing a dress and had a shawl. One church made her wear the shawl around her shoulders because that was their concern, the other one made her wrap it around her waist to give more leg coverage

This isn't something specific to Europe or even to Christianity. Yes, many Catholic and Orthodox churches will not allow you to enter wearing shorts or "revealing" clothing, but you wouldn't be able to wear shorts to visit a mosque or a Hindu temple either.

But yes, many cathedrals and such will have wraps available at the entrance for those who arrive with what is deemed inappropriate attire.

Just got back from Spain, had no problem in any of the churches with wearing shorts. Sagrada familia and other churches in Barcelona had tons of people Olin shorts. The church in Santiago del Compostela we wore hiking gear because we had just finished the Camino, and a lot of the people in there were people doing the camino

Thanks - we will be going to Sagrada Familia. I will pack a pair of shorts for times where that makes sense. Fortunately by the time we go it'll be much cooler outside so pants may not be a bad choice anyway.

That said - if I'm wearing shorts and make my way to a place that won't let me in, I'm going to blame TD.

I wear these in Europe while hiking because of cool mornings that turn into warm afternoons.

Also, shorts in some European cultures are frowned on being worn by adult-aged men.

They don't care at SF (within reason).

italy they care A LOT more than Spain. Men may be able to get away with it, women not even close to as much.

It was funny though, my wife had a fairly long dress on and they told her she had to wear a shawl around her waist at one place, meanwhile old women were in shorts with no problem.

My favorite, from St. Nektarios Monastery in Aegina, Greece.

Any issues with jeans? What about for my wife - jeans, pants or dress - what is preferred? Or is it more based on what is comfortable for her?

She will not have a problem in Italy with jeans or pants. Even shorter length capri style pants were worn. As long as her shoulders and knees are covered. They do have paper type shawl things, but I bought thin linen ones off of amazon for 5$ each.

Jeans should be fine. For your wife the best bet would be a modest dress.

Did the same as you did during July as well and had no issues with shorts. Our guide said that if they were knee length, there wouldn't be any issues.

At Sagrada Familia, no hats or sunglasses either and that was enforced due to security cameras. I didn't wear a hat in the other churches either.

I’m Sienna, shorts were okay but women needed to cover shoulders with shawls provided by church.

We were in Italy this summer. The no shorts thing is definitely not enforced. All of our tour guides specifically told us not to wear long pants in the middle of summer - decent shorts (golf shorts for men) was perfectly acceptable. As long as shorts are not excessively short or revealing, you are not likely to have any problems. We saw some girls getting in in short cutoff jean shorts, but bigger places like the Vatican tend to be more strict. They do enforce the no bare shoulders rule, but most provide disposable shawls to those who need them. Being there in October, long pants may be more comfortable, but nice shorts will also be allowed throughout Italy.
