Lots of people got one with their mobile plan. Now Apple isn't subsidizing them as much anymore and so the price has shot up. When my current one wears out, I'm getting a moderate priced Android model out of pocket, because I long since moved to Mint Mobile. There's no justifying the kinds of prices that the Verizons and T-Mobiles charge.

Apple is fine until you need an actual utility like a decent SSH app or a SIP app that can call a phone without registering to a PBX. Then you’re completely screwed. It’s not like Android is that much better. You need a fairly locked and certified distribution to a) have your phone carrier whitelisted and b) use official media apps. But ya you can still do a lot more with Android.

I hate mine and my watch, but everyone in my family has them, so its just easier...

I had a pretty bad car wreck and the watch called 911 which woke me up, so thats the only reason i still have an apple watch

I despise, despise, being forced to use my phone to do shite I can do on a laptop or PC. I don't get what is wrong with younger generations that want to fat finger shite on a phone keyboard.

I enjoy the irony of "you can do a lot more," right after you list a number of caveats and requirements.

In the old days there was more friction between. I used to have Android. I eventually switched to iPhone because everyone I knew was on iPhone.

Almost everyone I know in law, medicine, CRE, banking, etc. are on iPhones. So that's a pretty big swath of the professional world, and that contingent probably isn't the type to play around with preferred tech all that much.

The ecosystem is likewise popular - watches, AirPods. I just think a huge portion of people don't really ever question it.

Macs let you install software…. And use a Unix shell…

iOS lets you use the “App Store”

2 days ago in just tried to find a softphone app that would just let me dial another phone for testing. I literally tried 10. Not one would do it without PBX registration. Android has dozens.

With an SSH shell, I don’t use it for much more than a docker command but there simply isn’t a decent free one on iOS and I’m not going to pay for one just to not like it any better.

Apparently iOS App Store has some rule where if you make a phone app you have to use some Apple kit that does not allow direct SIP dialing. I didn’t dive into it too deep but I felt the pain of trying every app available, even “open source” ones and none allowed it.

Voice memos to the group? Nextel PTT was fine when you're at a jobsite, but seems pretty inappropriate in a "civilian" setting where someone may be at church, playing a video game, brunching with the ladies, in a movie, etc.

.I don't care about other apple products, but the iPhone is so easy for my family to use. I also find it easy to use and prefer it.

Apple is good for people who don't like tech. So chics and kids and old people keep them relevant. They need easy to use simplistic devices. If you like tech and latest and greatest you like Android. I tried apple for 2 years and was just too boring and never felt like they upgraded anything. Every update I was getting a "new" feature I had on android devices for years. It's too locked down for my liking

* Easy to use. People make fun of them for being an old person's phone but that is kind of the point. It's a phone, not a sacred quest for secret knowledge known to only a few. They used to call iPhones old folks phones on Crackberry and ridicule them. How did that work out?

* Facetime. Big for families.

* Of course, the ecosystem with MacBooks and iPads. I love my Android phone but I use the iPad Pro because let's face it, the iPads are far superior to Android tablets.

* iMessage. Standardized for Apple and works on all three devices: MacBook phone iPad. Google just rolled out RCS but it is not universal and often can't be used if a carrier does not adopt it.

* The Apple Store. That is an underrated feature of Apple that many critics don't get. You make appointment, go to Apple Store, get a solution. No mailing anything off. Apple nails customer service. Meanwhile, Google and Samsung customer service horror stories populate the web.

I love tech but I don’t need my phone to be more than an appliance. As long as it does what I need, then that’s fine.

In general, I find that apps work better and the hardware is more reliable. YMMV.
