What are the downsides of switching to AT&T Fiber? (For a business)

I currently have Suddenlink cable and they have pissed me off. I can also just get much faster internet for cheaper with AT&T.

I know AT&T has customer service issues, but so does Suddenlink so that's a wash.

The AT&T box is located in a utility closet on my building's floor. Will they run cable so that my gateway is in my office? Can I connect my own router to their gateway?

I have zero complaints about ATT Fiber, but short of some frickery, you can’t use your own router/gateway.

The show-stopper for me is that would mean having to give money to AT&T.

AT&T

They are a cock sucker of a company. They royally suck. Since you are having issues with Suddenlink's customer service, at this point, might as well go with the faster service and also weigh price points into your decision.

I"m on 100/10 for $117/mo with Suddenlink

I will get 300 plan w AT&T for $95/month (For now at least) and a $300 gift card.

After a year I can sign back up with Suddenlink to take advantage of whatever their new customer offer is

My 1000/1000 is like 60/month.

What kind of crap deal is that.

I have had nothing but upsides. Cheaper, faster, and more reliable than Comcast ever was for me. Plus I get HBOMax included. 1 gig up/down for $80/mo.

My AT&T Fiber has been rock solid. When the people building houses around me cut my fiber, AT&T was out in 24 hrs to rerun it and charged me nothing.

I got ATT fiber right before thanksgiving when I moved into my new house. I think ATT forgot to come back and bury my line because after about 8 weeks the mowers came by the house and cut the line while mowing.

I gave ATT an earful for not coming back to bury it, and they had someone out at 8am to fix it the next day

I have ATT fiber and haven't had to deal with customer service because it just works all the time. I lost service for about 6 hours with Hurricane Ida, that's it.

The only downside is you need to use their modem

You won’t need to go through AT&T customer service because their Fiber unit is flawless

This goes back to my question in OP (I also clarified this is for my office). My sweet is located a few offices away from the closet where the fiber will originate. Will they run cable from that origination to my office or will I have to rely on Wi-Fi from the equipment closet? If so how good is the Wi-Fi because there's about two or three offices between me and the equipment closet

I imagine that would be building specific. And is this a private leased suite, or part of a larger office? If private, I can’t imagine they would want multiple customers on a single gateway, so I imagine they would run glass to your suite.

Shame GloFiber isn't available in your area.

They tend to bring their stuff in and put their big router in what they call the DMARC. Usually in a central place like you mentioned. From there it is usually up to you to pay someone and get it to your suite.

So you may need someone to run a line from the DMARC to your suite. That could be fiber or if the distance is short enough, an ethernet line. Once at your suite you would connect the router, wifi, whatever, that you want to use.

That's likely what I meant by "origination"

It's sub-50 ft iirc. I ran a coax from that closet and made an outlet for my office and I'm pretty sure I used a 50' coax cable

If you can run a cable easily yourself, why not just run a rope before the install and have the installer tie his fiber on the end and pull it through during the install?

That's what I did for my residential AT&T fiber install last December. My office with my networking closet is on the exact opposite side of the house from where the fiber comes off the pole. So I just ran a rope myself through the attic from my office to a hole in the soffit, asked him to tie onto it and I got in the attic and pulled it through. He only came inside my house to do the termination in the office.

I already have coax and could 100% do that. I did not know that was an option

With a business connection you can and should use your own equipment. They'll mount the Cinea service delivery switch then hand off to a router. You can't modify the config on the att router so you're best off using your own gear from there.
