Samsung Curved TV we’ve had a for a long time crapped out. We can hear sound from it but no picture. We have a living area that’s got plenty of sunlight and are unsure if we should go with another curved, try a QLED, or something else. The entertainment center we have can fit a 50” max. Wife (no pics) wants a Frame TV, but not sure if it’s worth the extra cost.

Any suggestions?

If you are going to spend money on a "Frame TV" (I wouldn't waste my money on that).

Then I would definitely get an LG OLED.

48" LG OLED C1 - Hard to find though since they just came out

The CX series from last year is almost as good, if you need a new TV today.

If you want an LED and something with color accuracy, the Sony X90J 50". It just came out. Sony's processing is top notch. The X90J has the new XR processor, full 48gbps HDMI 2.1 ports (2 of them on port HDMI 3 & 4), etc.

If you want OLED, the C1. Or if you can still find it, last year's 48" CX. But both are the same price, so might as well go for the newer C1. The only thing about OLED is you kind of have to baby it due to potential risk of burn in. You'll have to switch up your content.

Agreeing with what Ultima said.

For the TVs released so far in 2021, the highest rated one under 50" seems to be the LG C1. But the LG C1 is basically a slightly updated version from last year's LG CX. The 2020 LG CX was pretty much universally recognized as one of the best tvs released last year with everything including price being considered. So if you're going to look into LG, you might want to view a C1 vs CX comparison video to make sure the additional price is worth it.

They are kinda pricey though depending on your budget. I "think" the 2020 LG CX costs around $1500 (although the price may have dropped with the C1 being released recently) and the 2021 C1 costs around $1700.

Edit: They may not be a price difference between the CX and C1 if the above post is correct.

I just bought the 55". Comes in tomorrow. I thought 55" was the smallest version of it. If it comes in 50" or under, it would likely be the highest rated sub 50" tv released so far in 2021. Very pricey though. The LG G1 is getting great reviews for a "Frame" type tv, but again, not sure if it is offered under 55" and I don't think it has hit retailers yet. Can be purchased from LGs website though.

Awesome. Thanks for the replies. I’ll look into these. Do you think with the “glare” I get in the room these TVs will be fine?

I forgot to add that we rarely watch TV, and at the moment don’t even have a streaming service. I will need to have the TV for a week from today, but I’m sure most places online should be able to accommodate that.

Was the previous tv fine in the room? What model was it?

Here's a video of the X90J with some lights hitting the screen in the background: https://youtu.be/n7m9R5wwatA?t=975

Yes it was, but I honestly have no idea if it was the “curve” or just the TV.

It was a Samsung 48 H8000

I looked up the X90J and saw an X80J for sale at a local Best Buy. Seemed like a good price and again, I really couldn’t care less if I have the best as we hardly watch it and neither me or my kids are gamers, except for my son’s fricking Minecraft habit.

Unless you watch TV with the sunlight directly on it I would not be too worried about any of these. The LED sets will definitely get brighter, but not sure if it worth the trade off.

Gotcha .

Now the X80J has an IPS panel and the X90J has a VA panel. These are two different screen technologies. The IPS just means the contrast is weaker and the blacks on the tv will be weaker and look more grayish, but the viewing angles are better than a VA panel. The X80J doesn't have the Full Array Local Dimming system either to help with the grayish blacks. But if you're not looking for the best, that may not matter to you then.

Here's a difference between the two:

IPS

VA

Honestly, I would get something with a VA panel if you want LED. rtings did a review on the X80J if you want to read it. https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony/x80j

This what the blacks look like on the X80J from the rtings review. You can see the grayish blacks and some light bleed at the bottom right corner. That's just the nature of IPS.

Good God, man.

I was just looking for suggestions. Now I feel like a Best Buy employee. I really do appreciate the info. I’ll take in all of this info and see what fits me. Would rather not go past $1100-1200 for a TV mainly because of the lack of use it’ll get (occasional movies, sports here and there, etc)

Now the Sony X950H is an excellent choice. I almost got it last year, but held off until this year to get something with HDMI 2.1. The 49" is now $998 and it was Sony's flagship 4k LED tv last year. It's getting harder to find in the 49", but you can still do it (ABT Electronics still has them in stock, as well as B&H). It's got Full Array, gets very bright and has all the goodies. It's got great reviews.

Here was rtings verdict on it (you don't have to worry about glare) https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony/x950h

quote:

The Sony X950H is great for most uses. It's well-suited for any type of lighting conditions, as it has a great contrast ratio that allows it to produce deep blacks, and its excellent peak brightness can easily overcome glare. It delivers a great HDR experience and upscales lower resolution content from cable TV well. It has a fast response time and low input lag, but there are no advanced gaming features like VRR. It can display chroma 4:4:4 and is immune to permanent burn-in, making it a very good choice for use as a PC monitor.

Our definitions of "fairly old" vary significantly..

This is 'fairly old' - BTW, I'll admit I've more than once considered picking one up to retrofit flatscreen into.

Since you're limited to 50 inches and are in a rush, I'd recommend getting a good deal on a 2020 Sony -- such as the X950H or X900H models. The X90H provides the HDMI 2.1 hookups for gaming but the X95H is a superior picture. If not into heavy gaming, I heartily recommend the X950H.

Of course, the newer Sony XR95J and XR90J are even better but are just now tricking into the stores. And you will pay top dollar right now.

Samsung did not get good reviews on their 2020 models.

If you want the best "deals" look at the TCL Series 6 MiniLed TVs. Vizio and Hisense are good deals but a step down in picture. (Vizio top of the line OLED is an exception)

LG only makes good (very good) OLED TVs but stay away from their regular LED TVs.

And, once again, Sony makes superior OLEDs as well.

We just bought the Frame from Samsung. Unboxed it yesterday. It's my first QLED tv. I definitely recommend the higher ends screens. Blew me away. All my other TVs are low end TLC and UHD Samsungs.

Don't get the Frame if it's simply going in an entertainment center, like you mentioned in your post. Not worth the cost. Ours is going on a decorative wall in our kitchen/dining area. It definitely needs a setting like that and not in an entertainment center.

Samsung QLED or whatever LG equivalent does seem worth it. This is based on only having one for 24 hours.

You need a new entertainment center, and to get a much bigger TV.

The following words have never been uttered: "I wish I would've gotten a smaller TV."

How funny, same tv just crapped out on me to with the same issue. Tried replacing everything I could and finally called it quits and bought a new 70" Samsung UHD. So far, so good. the QLED is a little outta my range for a TV but this UHD is quite nice in my opinion.

Go with a lower end at Costco. You can just upgrade every few years and not spend the price of a used car

I just bought a 75" LG 4k. I don't think the processor is very good, I get a lot of errors and slow movement between apps. It's great once it's playing but I wouldn't really recommend.
