Time to upgrade my iPhone12

Firstly, I never care about having the latest phone/gadget. I just want a functioning phone that will work for years to come. I guess I have had this phone two years now, and while it seems better than my previous phone battery life wise, I can still tell I won't get much more mileage out of it.
I have T-Mobile and can get $200 trade-in for this phone and am leaning towards the iPhone 15 Plus but trying to decide if I should just get the 15 Plus or 16 Plus.
I typically want a phone that has been proven, and since the 16 just came out I feel like I can trust the 15 more. I don't really care about Apple Intelligence and honestly do not even know what it does or what it is. From my understanding it's something AI related, and I do not care about those sorts of gimmicks.
Looks like the only option is 128gb with the 15 Plus though, which is what I currently have with my 12. Space has never been an issue - I pretty much keep the same apps I have now and never install anything new.
With my trade-in, the 16 Plus equates to an extra $8.33/mo. over 24 months, or $200. I do not care that the 16 is newer and would net better trade-in value in the future as my hope is that Apple has fixed some issues and my next phone lasts longer than the previous ones have been lasting - could've sworn they were involved in a lawsuit of the batteries failing and essentially forcing people to upgrade every 2 years.

the 16 release was met with a pretty large collective sigh, so probably not missing much if you'd prefer the 15.

just get a new battery for $100 if you feel the battery is not cutting it anymore.

This might be the right take in most years, but not this year. The 15 Pro is the dividing line for Apple Intelligence. The 15 does not support Apple Intelligence. Especially since he doesn't buy phones frequently, he should get a 16 or at least a 15 Pro.

Agree, the next time he buys a phone it will be 2030.

Pay full price for the phone. Dump t mobile for Mint. Save $50 a month.

Any why not just get an iPhone SE?

They are going to release a newer SE model in March/April. It’s not confirmed that it will support Apple Intelligence, but it’s hard to imagine it not doing so.

OP gives zero shits about AI, lol

This does seem very puzzling to me. What exactly are people expecting to gain from Apple Intelligence? I mean, Siri, has been a fricking joke. It's the most worthless bullshite addition next to Bixby.
Please don't spend extra money for a feature that you aren't even sure of its utility. At least make these companies provide some value for your money.
As far as I can tell, Apple Intelligence, is just another spy utility for these corporations to gather information about your habits.

Tesla has a phone. I read it has solar panels built in so it charges on its own during daylight.

I’ve been getting one every four years. I find trading in a four-year-old iPhone gets pretty good value. I traded in a 10 Pro Max for 14 Pro Max and basically had to pay about $400 for it. So, now I’m waiting for the 18 Pro Max to come out in 2026. I also wait a couple months after they first come out so as not to get caught up in the panic and frenzy of wanting to get it immediately. I figured by then you’ll have cleared out all the suckers.

I’m using an 11 right now and I could keep it until they turn off 4G.
Why only do the economics of t-mobile? You can buy outright and pre-pay instead of financing(partially shown and partially hidden). I haven’t yet heard of a use for Apple intelligence, but maybe they’ll come up with one. Older phones still have additional math cores. Battery lawsuits are as dumb as any technical or science-based lawsuits. No LiPo battery on earth will keep performance after 300-500 cycles so lowering clock and voltage requirements for older batteries is a universally good feature. Hell, the new advanced silicon batteries last even fewer cycles than traditional LiPo.
As said before, get a new battery and you’re golden.

No element of trust involved. The 16 works fine. But for your needs might as well get the 15 Pro. No real significant difference in the 15 & the 16.

I'm a little late to the thread, but I just traded a 64GB 11 pro max for a 512GB 16 Pro Max. The 11 was in flawless condition and the battery was at 86% capacity, so it was showing a little age, but nothing that I couldn't work around.
T-Mobile gave me $200 for the 11 so I pulled the trigger.
The big upgrades for me are a slightly bigger screen and better resolution, Apple Intelligence (the beta popped up on the phone and MacBook Pro yesterday), and 5G. At home, T-Mobile has 5G UC (Ultra Capacity). UC in my area is mid band cellular frequencies so data downloads are faster. UC also includes exceptionally fast millimeter wave frequencies, but those are limited to line of sight and can be blocked by glass, leaves, etc. so they wont be deployed to areas with a lot of tall buildings, trees, etc..
(edit) The 16 supports hiding your IP address with Safari, so another security benefit as well.
I'm enjoying the upgrade and unless some big new feature comes out, I most likely won't upgrade until the iPhone 20 - 21 timeframe.

Same situation here.
My iPhone 12 is fine EXCEPT I'm constantly running out of storage space. It's 64G and I know that's not enough storage space nowadays. Probably 128G minimum.
Had heard there are camera quality photo issues with later models. Fuzzy. Won't focus etc.
I removed apps, big photos etc. Down to 55/64GB but have a big trip coming up and really debating the upgrade. Am eligible for a new one through T Mobile but don't relish the thought.
Any other similar experiences or thoughts? Thanks!!

Upgrading every three-four years is the sweet spot imo. Especially since most carriers now offer trade ins where you barely have to pay anything to upgrade (if you keep the same plan) I have a 15 pro and will likely upgrade to the 18 in 2026.
OP, just get the 16. Especially since it sounds like you don’t upgrade often.

If you aren't set on getting a new phone just yet, maybe replace the battery and do a factory restore on it. Just start fresh. I am using my daughters XR that she swore the battery would only last an hour. I go all day without charging. Once a lot of apps that are running in the background are cleared out, it's amazing how long the batteries do last. A battery change is probably about $100 or so, not sure. A lot cheaper that $1k.
