Switching to Sling/Roku

Not the biggest technology buff, but I'm thinking about getting rid of cable. The problem is I would still like to have the local channels mainly for (Sportsline Friday night) on WAFB in the Fall, and the Saints on Fox/CBS. Is there a way I can buy a Roku box set up Sling ,and still get reliable local channels.

I got an antenna and a Tablo so I could have a full interactive guide for live tv.
I place my Tablo device and antenna in my attic for best reception.
Just like sling, you download Tablo as an app for the Roku. It’ll bring you to your local channels. It will give you space to record and watch/record up to 4 shows at once.
I opted for the premium one time fee for the 14 days subscription and the ability to watch it on my phone anywhere in the world. You can set it to record your favored series and set parameters on what it’ll record. It even has auto skip function to skip commercials when dvr’d
Last time I was in Cancun, I could tune into local sports from my antenna and watch live games while sitting at the hotel bar with Spanish soccer on.

Youtube tv is the way to go imo. You get all your local networks and free unlimited DVR. $50/mo beats the heck out of cable.

Get an antenna also, you will be able to catch pretty much all the sports between sling and the antenna.
I recommend getting the fire stick or one of amazons other devices. I constantly had problems with my roku.
Download ESPN app on your streaming device, it works much better than sling (you will still need sling to sign into ESPN)

The set up gobuxgo5 recs sounds good. Or you can be like me, and just switch been the Roku/Sling and a digital antenna. A little clunky because you gotta use two remotes, that's pretty much the only downside.

Did this years ago and have not regretted it yet. Saving $100 each month on cable. As far as the local channels get a Digital antenna and you will get your local stations.

Only drawback I remember to YouTube was no nfl network.
I used sling last football season and it was kind of shite to be honest. The interface was terrible and you could only stream to one tv for the orange channels (ESPNS).

Sling.com usually has a free roku box with 2 month package. Scrill all the way to the bottom of homepage... should be on bottom left. You can then cancel sling after that and test try other streaming services for free for a month or so. After that you decide on which one you like best a sign up month to month.
Sling basic packages are cheapest but basic. I had PlayStation Vue but the price kept going up. I have YouTube tv now and I'm happy with it.
You can also get an over the air antenna for $15 anywhere to get local channels free. The free hd is amazing quality btw.

Been there, done that. My problem is the internet service sucks the big one. Got to the point old dial up was faster. Used my phone for internet services. Have a unlimited plan there. So I can still use Roku and other free services. OP, you need to check your speed on the net.
Got a great deal with Dish now fixed for two years. less then half what I was paying for DTV and a better package.

I have Hulu. A handful of good original series, every local channel, all the ESPN, FOX, and NBC sports channels, Fox Sports South & Southeast, bunch of kid shite, History, Smithsonian, all the Cable news networks, then like TBS, TNT, USA, etc... TCM, VICE, and a few others... The only thing I really miss are AMC, Comedy, and Paramount.
With HULU, Netflix, Prime, and HBOGO, I’m still something like 85 dollars ahead of Dish and DirecTV.
And if I get tired of Hulu’s bullshite, I don’t have to speak to some snot nosed nerd from New Hampshire to find out where I need to send their shite so I don’t get fined $400 for keeping equipment.

I prefer Hulu Live to YTTV.
RE Hulu they have all the local BR channels.
I suggest you try both out for the free period and decide which one works best for you.

We did this about a year ago and while there have been some hurdles, it's saved us a good chunk of cash.
If you get a Roku, don't screw around with the lesser versions, get the Ultra Streaming. One of our "hurdles" was that the less-expensive ones we got kept dying due to overheating despite being in an open area with plenty of airflow (the problem is the smaller ones are completely enclosed so air doesn't flow through). While the Ultra Streaming doesn't have airflow slits, it seems that just the extra size helps balance out the heat issues (possibly a bigger and/or better heat sink?) because I have had no problems with it overheating.
We went with Hulu +Live. We ended up getting a Roku for it because apparently Sony's Bravia series and Hulu are at some sort of odds because Hulu's app for Bravia tv's will not allow local channels.
Hulu +Live will run about $50-$60/month and you get all the local channels (except for WBXH for some odd reason), the SEC channel and all of the ESPN's (plus a buttload of other stuff). There is no contract and you can cancel at any time.
No idea on Youtube's offerings.
