Starting a forum site

I've got an idea for a forum (small niche group, this is no money maker). Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for hosts? Platforms? TIA.

PM Chicken and ask him what this site uses and stay away from it. Maybe they're still on the free trial version, but this site needs a refresh bad.

Most people here don't want a refresh. I know I don't. It's simple and functional.

This is far and away the best forum site I have ever been on

Oh, and to actually answer your question -- I run a niche message board myself. At different times I've used Hostwinds, Dreamhost, and HostGator, and they'll all do just fine running a message board on the standard shared hosting plans. I've run this board on phpBB for over 20 years and it's solid software (and free).

I'm using phpBB LINK /
Used this and ran a forum for years, but we just evolved to chatting on different apps. Need a site to host it, and doing updates isn't always fun. Especially if you get bored and find a bunch of fun mods. It became more work than I wanted to do. If you keep it to the basic stuff it is probably a lot easier.

I prefer maintaining a message board because it creates a good long record of conversations (and in the case of the board I maintain which involves video game programming on very old hardware, people frequently reference information documented from many years ago), something I believe is being lost in modern chat apps and social media based communities on the internet these days. But you are absolutely right about phpBB mods. Maintaining and repairing a board using so many mods in the phpBB 1.x and 2.x days was such a task that I ended up building a bunch of PHP and SQL programming knowledge when I was a teenager. It's a lot easier in the 3.3.x branch that exists these days, but I'd still recommend only sticking to the more common mods with a lot of users so you know things will be well supported. And back up your database frequently.

You're right on, the conversation history that me and my buddies have over 15 years is probably priceless. Also probably a good idea to destroy it at the same time. I do have the backups, in case we get the itch to start it up again. Also have the domain name that I can sell.
I'll add that now there are apps that make it super easy to keep up on the forum, vs. at first where it was website only.

You might want to take a look at Pro Boards. You can have a free forum there (will have to tolerate some ads unless you pay a small fee), and not have to deal with the install and maintenance of forum software. There forums run well, and from an admin standpoint work just like phpBB.

First of all: badly*
Second: vast majority doesn’t want a refresh. Nearly every other forum is a busy-looking mumbo jumbo crappy website

They will be calling that "evidence" when .gov gets rid of 230.
