SpaceX Starlink rumor

May be BS but maybe not
spacex rumor
SpaceX is getting closer to making its Starlink satellite internet service available to customers. This week, the company sent out emails to those who showed interest in being part of the Starlink beta testing.
SpaceX is calling the beta test “Better Than Nothing” with the email starting out by saying SpaceX is “trying to lower your initial expectations.”
Expect to see data speeds vary from 50Mbps to 150Mbps and latency from 20ms to 40ms over the next several months as we enhance the Starlink system. There will also be brief periods of no connectivity at all.

Like every internet provider ever.

Still better than Comcast

Pricing is not terrible, but I'm hoping they say one way or the other about data caps soon.

I guess it's not bad if you live in the boonies since you have no other choice, but I think most major ISPs are beating that price/performance pretty handily.

Yeah I was a little disappointed in that price point. It’s not terrible, but a little steep by comparison. Best I get is 10/1 where I’m at for $50/mo. I was hoping this would give me a better option.

This compares very favorably to other satellite internet where you might get 20\3 for $100 a month $400 startup cost and a very very low monthly cap. Oh and don't forget the 1 second latency.

The point is to reach underserved markets, and I think the pricing is actually pretty good for what you get compared to some other options (geostationary satellite, sloooow dsl).
I would also expect Musk to do everything possible to lower the pricing later on.

I agree, I think the pricing will come down as they work out the kinks. This isn’t made to compete in areas with broadband established, but instead to provide broadband where it is not currently offered

It is absolutely designed to compete with broadband.
Most people only have one option for service in their area. Also, broadband rarely ever delivers on the advertised "maximum" speed. The average speed across the USA is less than 50mbs.

In my experience with Cox this is not the case.

This seems like it is, if true, probably a skewed stat.
Average how? Like Baton Rouge would be 1000mbps and the middle of the Mojave Desert would be 0mbps or are we talking the average household internet speed? If the former then it is obvious why that stat is meaningless, if the latter then that stat is probably heavily skewed by household income versus availability. ~75% of the US population lives in or near urban areas. Most, if not all of, those urban areas are likely served by an ISP that can provide at or above 50mbps down speeds. So, it is probably safe to assume the average available bandwidth to Americans across the US is higher than 50mbps speeds, even though some households may choose not to pay for those speeds. I could see this bringing the average household internet speed below 50mbps, but that doesn't mean the average available speed to households is less than 50mbps. So, if they are choosing to have slower than 50mbps because it is $50/mo and they can't afford it then they certainly aren't Starlink's target demographic.

Starlink would be better off catering to the ~25% of Americans that do not live near urban areas at their current pricing/performance. Adding another option for those with access to broadband isn't going to steal a lot of customers away at the above-quoted pricing/performance

No caps during the beta. I don't think they have confirmed the final specs yet though.

Depends on how frequent this is. Every 10 mins or every 10 hours or every couple weeks?

I once lived in the boonies at a newly established address.
I wouldve killed for Starlink back then. That 1.5 MB/s with horrible latency and packet loss was awful
The problem I think with reaching those who need this will be the marketing.

Suddenlink is shaking in their shoes

I tweeted at Musk asking for the beta since I still do not have Suddenlink back up in SWLA. He didn't answer

Yes.
It’ll be over gaps in orbital periods as they are filling out the network.
At first it will be fairly regular. Then it will wind down to a stars aligning scenario like 5 minutes every 96 hours.
Then not at all.

Eta: my hope is that Musk has always been “let’s do what’s good for all” . If so, he’ll offer a set price with no caps . If not, he’s no better than AT&T or Comcast.

Prices are HORRIBLE! I pay 35 dollars cheaper with non sat in rural area for 85 down and 30 up.
