Instead of paying $200, you could purchase an ESU and continue to use Windows 7.

Seriously though, why are people still using an unsupported OS? Unless you have software that isn’t compatible with Windows 10, there’s no reason not to upgrade.

we have over 20 million hits a month on our website and i manage the analytics. our customer base (medical industry) are coming in at 50/50 Win7/Win10. In fact, it wasn't until this quarter Win 10 overtook Win7.

This is my problem. I've been told I can run a virtual machine in Win10 where I can run old software but this is mission critical software so don't want to take the chance of it not working.

No disrespect intended but if its that important, it should have been updated long ago. Just curious, what is it running on now?

Show me where they flat out lie to their customers like Microsoft does...

I'll be waiting for that link too.

We'll Those aren't flat out lies like Microsoft saying it costs $200 to upgrade when they are giving it away for free. Those are little more like little white lies?...

So what kind of mission critical software are we talking about here and why hasn't it been updated in so long?

have you ever worked in a healthcare facility? They have dozens if not hundreds of legacy systems that can't easily be updated for a variety of reasons.

There are still mainframes out there and cobol programmers are millionaires.

Microsoft is not lying to customers.

Officially, they do not give it away for free.

Some have found a loophole and MS has chosen not to close that loophole SO FAR.

There is a big difference.

Hell we still have some machines running Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008

I had to fill out so many flyers to corporate as to why we're not upgrading them yet

yup.

i'm in the middle of a massive migration of 3 server 2008 machines right now that do the backbone of work on our side and its like pulling teeth.

hopefully we're on the downside now. we chose not to update the software and instead revisit the entire process and migrate this to a new platform.

always fun

What is involved in a upgrade to 10 from 7. Our cheesedick IT department is doing the upgrade by taking individual laptops from users, handing them a replacement from the refurb pile that already has 10, and then adding the users old laptop to the pile that needs to be upgraded.
Does that make sense? Is it necessary for an IT person to perform the upgrade?

Seems like when I upgraded my home PC to windows 10 long ago I didn't have to do anything but say "yes I want to upgrade."

It's all based on their system back end. Ours is all through sccm and group policy, so we can push updates OTA (like the W10 1903 update)

Healthcare is not the norm in staying up to date on operating systems. They might be the worst industry for that.

right, but its not the IT department's fault in all cases due to all the legacy systems they have to continue to support.

TBH it's way less disruptive to the users that way. Much easier to prep a laptop test it and spend 30 minutes swapping out than it is to take down a user for 2-3 hours and hold your breath that nothing goes wrong.
