A couple years ago I was buying SAMSUNG 1 TB NVME drives for $50. Today the absolute bottom of the barrel no name Chinese drive is $150. For Samsung you're looking at closer to $250 for 1 TB now.
shite is so ridiculous.
This post has no point other than me ranting. Thanks for listening.

Bought a 32 GB ram kit for like $220 18 mins ago.
Same kit is over 500 now
It's ridiculous and its 100% because of the AI Data centers

I just fired up an old Nvidia Jetson this weekend just to act as a 1TB NFS share on my stack because I had the NVMe already and adding a whole machine made more sense than upgrading an existing NVMe from 1TB to 2TB.
I think things are going to get worse on the consumer side just because 1. local models are just finally becoming useful for agentic coding as of a couple months ago leading to poor utilization of resource and 2. Big tech API providers keep proving that they can’t be trusted. Every day someone gets arrested or investigated because of an AI chat or some organization’s secrets become general LLM knowledge despite their high dollar “enterprise” privacy plan.

Laptop manufacturers should have never dropped the 2.5" bay. At least I could have put spinning HD media in if they had....

It is because of AI datacenters why memory prices and SSD's are so expensive. This is what happens when one of the major manufacturers pivots to focus on datacenters instead of retail.

Spoken like someone that has never stepped foot in either. Toured the Switch facilities in Vegas, and the layout, cooling, and power infrastructure is very different from their "non-AI" facilities.
Could they work in either? Sure, but there's a reason they're not building them the same

Now do small business servers. An 8k server is now 25k. 2800 bucks for 32GB of server memory.

That's the HPE/Dell markup price

I'm trying to outfit 2 NAS enclosures.
Managed to find 2 15 year old 3tb hitachis on eBay for $40ea with less than 150 hours on ebay.
They clearly had never been put to use.
Just gonna ride with those for now until the prices get in check..if ever.
I see they are pushing 30 and 40tb spin drives for 2027 but you could buy a Lexus for less money.
